I got a huge kick out of these photos I found in the NYTimes. The lead in says this:

"For the last two years, the Shanghai Commission for the Management of Language Use has been trying to clean up English-language signs and menus to rid them of their malapropisms, like these examples."

I hope they never 'get it right' there is something oddly endearing about their massacre of the english langague.

Smart Noshery Makes You Slobber. I kinda get how that could translate from good eatery with mouth watering food. But, The Jews Ear Juice, I just cant figure. Whats the guess on whats the juice in that can?

sophia37 -> RE: chinglish (5/8/2010 10:23:37 AM)

Here's the article that goes with the photos. Cant see how I missed it, but its worth reading as well.

Actually, that one wasn't a mistranslation. Apparently, "Jew's Ear" is the name of a fungus. It is mixed with some other things, and sold as a beverage. http://newatlasbev.com/450/juice/jews-ear-juice/

My favourite mistranslation I've run into in person was on the menu at a Mexican restaurant. The description of a seafood combination dish that included squid, crab, shrimp, and mussels claimed that it would "come to life in your stomach.!"[:'(]

Well thanks! I just forwarded that little piece of info., to other people who remarked about Jews ears. That was interesting. I'm glad you posted it. Learning new stuff all the time I guess. lol

sweetboundesire -> RE: chinglish (5/8/2010 5:49:58 PM)

thanks i also support the slaughtering of the english language. it will be a sad day when they get it all right.
for laughs i sometimes visit engrish.com it's a site totally dedicated to this sort of english massacre

sophia37 -> RE: chinglish (5/9/2010 6:23:20 AM)

I really had no idea there was so much stuff out there on Engrish or Chinglish. Or that there was a best selling book with just that as the context and content. Or even now that there's a science to it! Im amazed that theres so much in this world I do not know and will never know. I guess that why I like to stop in here and have a look around. Collarme in general offers up some interesting ideas and commentary on so many thoughts ideas and happenings.

Chinglish sounds like a language spoken by children.
