Hi folks--

Looks like there's a problem with the containment dome used to take up some of the spilled oil; it's getting clogged with hydrates.

This was a concern from the start.  Nobody knew what was gonna happen as this has only been done in shallow water. The formation of the ice crystals was a known problem going in.

It was always considered a long shot they have hopped to make work.

Originally they thought that running hot water next to the pipe would help, but it seems to have failed.

A mix of water and methanol.  They were hopeful it was gonna work but nobody really knew.  They've never tried any of this stuff anywhere near this deep.

I still have friends down there where I grew up.  A couple of them work for the company who owns and works the robots.  They're not out at the location but they have a pretty good picture of what's going on from their coworkers.

Considering the risks of deep wells, you'd think industry or regulators would've demanded backup systems to the blowout preventers, or a better preventer.

Especially when you consider that this exact same thing happened before, and resulted in the second largest oil spill in history. There's absolutely no excuse for this. This never should have happened.

WASHINGTON - As calmer weather in the Gulf gave crews a chance to help buffer the Gulf Coast from the massive oil leak still offshore, the White House and Democratic lawmakers on Tuesday moved to change a law that caps BP's liability for economic damages at $75 million. The goal: Raise that cap to $10 billion.

Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez is co-sponsoring a measure that would raise the liability limit for impacts like lost wages or dwindling tourism to $10 billion. Those payments would be aside from the total spill cleanup costs, which analysts estimate as high as $14 billion.

Menendez also wants it to be made retroactive so it can apply to the huge spill that began after an oil rig exploded in the Gulf on April 20.

I'm not saying it would work....but it could work (in theory).....that if you put electrical conductors on opposite sides of the dome and apply current to it, this would cause the dome to heat up. The concept is no different than a burner on an electric stove. Once the dome heats up, the ice would surely melt, thus keeping the flow moving and eliminating the buoyancy problem.

When was the last time you tried to use your stove under 5,000ft of water?

Doesn't matter anymore they've moved the box off and are unloading the equipment to try a "top kill".  Unfortunately that's expected to take 2 to 3 weeks to work.

Or more probably, 2 to 3 weeks to find out that it doesn't work. I hope they've at least started that relief well.

They've been drilling for about a week or so.
