Can any of you out there recommend a good sturdy dog crate or cage that can be used for puppy play? The Mistress is looking for something that doesn't cost a fortune, is reasonably escape proof and large enough for extended stays. Most of the purpose built cages that we have looked at are fantastic, but they would crush our budget. Something that would fold up and and be portable would be a definite plus.

I just acquired a Classic Training Crate for dogs at Petco in the size suitable for a Great Dane.  It does fold up for flat storage, and cost $120something with tax.

I'm not into puppy play, but got the Giant sized Vari-Kennel for my (four legged) dog, and spent quite a  bit of time in it while crate training him. A few modifications would make it fairly escape proof for one with thumbs, and I found it pretty comfy. You can find such kennels on the cheap on craigslist and such.
Good luck!

Thanks for the inputs. I have a question for Voodali, with your puppy in the cage can he work his way out of it?

A human can open a dog crate from inside. However a couple of cheap padlocks or even cable ties which are incredibly cheap would eliminate that possibility.

But I strongly urge you not to. For one, many people find a small cozy place to be comforting and pleasant. And for another, in case of emergency you may well need to release yourself. So if she goes out for an hour and wants you to remain in there, it's better if you can get out in need. Of course if she will always be there and awake, then it shouldn't be a problem.

Try Midwest. When I was showing dogs, everyone used their crates. Very High quality, good price. Might be worth a look.

Remember not to leave anyone in a cage they can't straighten up or easily move around in for to long. A body need to be able to move for circulation and muscle health. Enjoy your new crate!
