DChammer -> Adult items beyond Ebay? (5/10/2010 8:45:46 PM)

I have been selling adult leather wear on Ebay over the past few years and have recently designed and had made some stainless steel butt plugs.   I want to move beyond Ebay and was looking for comments on next steps for the butt plugs.  I have had an online store in the past and intend to start one up for retail/wholesale of the butt plugs.

Was wondering if anyone out there has been successful moving beyond Ebay and how you did it.

Yes an odd topic and not many resources available.

Unless you are a part of an existing network, like eBay or Amazon, you will have difficulty selling your items, because people will have trouble finding your store. If you have a solid product, focus on establishing your brand through established online stores/distributors. Once your brand is known, people will seek out you directly and you will be able to gnerate more profit by cutting out the middle man.

I have been looking for adult items but I don't know where to look. I've never bought on ebay but I am willing to try if you know of a good site.

Depends on what items you want.  Some places specialize in paddles or floggers. The Stockroom and Good Vibrations are pretty good general sites.

Ebay is a good place to start out as the prices are usually lower than online stores and there is a huge variety of stuff.  You do need to look in the adult category which is somewhat hidden if you are not looking.  (Also the adult items do not show up in the regular searches).  Where Ebay falls off though is the custom and hand-made items which is usually of vastly better quality than the mass made items.  This is true on the regular side of Ebay also.

Thanks thatsub, that is what I needed to hear.  I am good at the design and manufacturing, but not so good at marketing.   Having a web store would be a good step to establishing relationships with other businesses.  Now just to figure out a catchy name that has not been taken :)

well first off I'd suggest sub-shop.com or extremerestraints.com (which is where you go when you hit the bdsm gear button on cm. which I think sends money back when you buy stuff :) ) not just because they tend to have slightly lower prices, but also because they have more than one picture of items. usually 4 or 5 for extremerestraints and around 10 for sub-shop. plus sub-shop has lots of pervy clothing too. shoes etc. although it's geared mostly towards female subs, so yeah.

and my suggestion is rather than starting your own webshop, you might find a smaller shop with an existing clientele and sell things on consignment. I wouldn't suggest trying one of these bigger stores unless you wanted to gear up for mass production. but maybe one of the smaller ones.

We started on ebay, became power sellers 6 years ago we sold 5 or 6 grand there. Today we barely maintain our powerseller status, comes and goes, BUT we sell on our website www.bdsm-gear.com . How?

A few hints.

Get YOUR OWN domain and Host. Not ecrater or ebaystores etc. YOUR OWN. A domain runs 10.00 bucks a year, hosting runs 5.00  a month and up.

Build a site. Make it yours. If you cant build it pay someone to build it, I charged for a business site about 800.00 , so gives you an idea of pricing,  if you look to hire someone to build it,   or learn html. This is a pretty good tutorial site for html   http://www.w3schools.com/html/

Be sure to do it right meta tags, alt tags, H1, SEO. LITTLE steps 8 years ago we thought selling 300 a week via our website was good. Today we would be upset if we didn't sell that a day.

STAY ON EBAY but the moment you get a site and products on it. Start stealing the customers. EVERY ebay order comes with  a business card and info on our site. Also we charge about 25% more on ebay then the website, incentive to get people off ebay .

LINK LINK LINK and good links, not links farms.

and time..be patient it takes time and work and effort. Hope that helped! If you ahve any questions feel free to contact me..:)

For hosting check out hostgator - they are a good host to start out with.
For domains look at dynadot - that's who i use & obviously I have no problem recommending them.

Thanks for the info.  I found out my old domain was available (xtcnation.com - what luck).  Am building the site now.  Certainly is not my specialty.
