HOUSTON A special education teacher at Jamie's House Charter School is being accused of beating one of her students and it was all caught on camera. The teacher has been fired and charges could be filed.

The boy's mom filed a police report with the Harris County Sheriff's Office, who is actively investigating the beating.

For almost one minute, a teacher was caught on a cell phone camera terrorizing a student. She beat, kicked and slapped the boy as classmates cheered and laughed.

It is bad enough when the kids attack teachers, or other kids, but this is too much.  Just seen the video on CNN

Adults that hit children should be prosecuted, whether they're teachers, parents, or strangers in the streets. No excuse.

bondmaid123 -> RE: Teacher Fired After Beating Caught on Camera (5/12/2010 1:27:12 PM)

This is pretty over the top. I disagree that "adult who hit kids should be prosecuted", as that's *way* too broad of a statement, but the behavior in the video is inexcusable.

sirsholly -> RE: Teacher Fired After Beating Caught on Camera (5/12/2010 1:31:32 PM)

Wow..that is simply shocking. Geez...

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Teacher Fired After Beating Caught on Camera (5/12/2010 1:31:55 PM)

It's Texas. She'll probably get the "Teacher Of The Year" award. But on the good side, that family will never have to worry about where their next meal is coming from after the lawyers get through with that school district.

It should be as illegal to hit a child as it is to hit an adult. If I go and whack some guy because he annoys me, he can sue me: and rightly so. Children should enjoy the same protection as you and I under the law.

It would certainly send out the message that abusing children is never okay.

I went to Catholic school and it was an everyday occurrence.

Maybe that's why I'm so twisted. [8D]

My thanks to Sister Beatrice.

I am not opposed to corporal punishment in theory. Is it effective for every child, no. However, the current environment of "The Blessed Sacred Child Around Whom The Universe Revolves" has helped create a society that is in chaos, and no, I'm not saying "BEAT THE BRATS!" but there is a *huge* difference between reasoning with an adult who is capable of abstract and analytical thought and dealing with a pre-verbal child.

I wholeheartedly disagree with you and refer you to the fact that the teacher who behaved in this scandalous way probably thinks along the same lines as you. Children shouldn't be taught the universe revolves around them,  but they shouldn't be hit just because some adults are too stupid to deal with their youth either. I also refer you to Scandinavian societies where children are respected as human beings (and therefore, not beaten on the principle that they are young) - most people would agree these societies are pretty successful.

I've had this conversation before with other people who think like you do, and it never got anywhere, so it's likely we'll never see each others' point of view, by the way [8D] .

And there is a huge difference between not hitting our kids and the "environment of "The Blessed Sacred Child Around Whom The Universe Revolves"

No.

There IS a huge difference between reasoning with an adult who is capable of abstract and analytical thought and dealing with a pre-verbal child. A child is not capable of analytical thought and rational. They are not able to understand why someone is a position of trust and authority is abusing them.

Depends on the child's personality, Holly - after a certain age especially (say, from the age of six or seven, in my personal experience), some children are very capable of analysing what's going on in a rational and thinking manner. It makes them even more appalled when they see adults commit abuses of power over them, and they grow up to become cynical and disenchanted [&o] .

Those children understand all too well, alas.

No argument, Kittin, when dealing with an older child.

Perhaps i misunderstood the wording, but i took "pre-verbal" to be a very young child.

Why would you say that?

She was HAWT!

Even in the penguin costume.

kittinSol -> RE: Teacher Fired After Beating Caught on Camera (5/12/2010 2:12:16 PM)

I'd missed the "pre-verbal", you're right. And even then: children that don't yet speak are far more perceptive than they're given credit for, don't you agree?

There was a fascinating article in the NYT this Sunday - it's a little off-topic, but you might find it interesting: The Moral Life of Babies. :-)

jlf1961 -> RE: Teacher Fired After Beating Caught on Camera (5/12/2010 2:13:21 PM)

Why is there always a sister Beatrice or Sister Catherine or Sister Mary something at every catholic high school?

Because they're all Saints that died horrible deaths - a thing that any good Catholic nun aspires too. There are a lot of Sister Agneses as well. And Sister Mary of the Holy Crucifix, and Sister Patrick of the Spilt Blood, and Sister John of the Drenched Cloth, and Sister Theresa of the Absent Tampon.

Catholic mythology is the creepiest I swear.
