i think that the U.N. should be allowed to do the function it was originally designed to do: Following in the wake of the failed League of Nations (1919–1946) (which the United States never joined) the United Nations was established in 1945 to maintain international peace and promote cooperation in solving international economic, social and humanitarian problems. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_nations

We are advised during a flight safety announcement that we should put on our own oxygen mask first and then assist others. This isn't being selfish but one can't help someone else if they are unconscious. So I voted for self first so to be strong enough to help others. It's been mentioned that there are groups dedicated to helping others. Those groups are not the government. When there have been natural disasters, individuals have given blood, time, money, and service to help others outside our borders. If the government sets its priority as being its own people, we don't have to stop being generous as individuals. Maybe, just maybe, there would be even more people in a position to be generous if our government took care of its own country first. Just my opinion.

FR Two thoughts: 1) The line 'charity begins at home' is now used to justify almost the exact opposite of that for which it was originally intended. The the line once implied, something like, 'in order to learn charitable habits to others, you have to practise it first at home'. 2) Why are so many people talking about USA helping other countries in the context of whether or not Americans can 'afford to be altruistic'? The USA - as well as other countries, like the UK - has interfered in other countries primarily in order to protect its own interests. For instance: without the poor of other countries staying poor, there wouldn't be the ultra-cheap labour that, in turn, keeps many of our own staple goods so cheap.
