Status: offline 		I'm wondering about the timing of this.  I suspect that the Obama administration is attempting to send out a feeler/disparage the existing mess, in advance of a proposal to repurpose the DEA's funding, perhaps diverting their agents to antiterrorism efforts.

You're very optimistic, Steve, but, while President Obama might be willing to admit to liking a little blow when he can afford it, the rest of us simply can't be trusted.

We could cut the crime rate subtantially and bring in enormous tax revenues if we would just legalize the stuff!

Actually, Obama is responsible for the mmj industry exploding in Colorado.  Once he told the DEA to not concern itself with mmj in states where it was legal, everything began to happen.  Although our idiot senators just passed HB1284, which will hamstring the nascent industry.

Yep. Particularly given some of the people that the profits from illegally grown drugs are going to, you'd have thought somebody would be up for that. I'd imagine opium poppies could be grown quite handily in the southwest as well.

How can you say it has not been a success?
We have one of the largest police forces in the world.
We have a prison industry that would collapse if the 70% of their population that is drug related were to go home.
On the upside if the govt were to decide to lock up dissidents all they would need to do to free up prison space would be to let all of the dopers out. So there would be no large capital expenditure for new prison construction.
Of course the courts would be free to use the 70% of excess capacity of prosecutors,judges,clerks and bailiffs.
You are reacting like a typical taxpayer...step back and try to see the big picture.
