LadyEllen -> Multi dimensional cosmic weirdness (5/17/2010 5:30:57 PM)

"How's about this then?" as Jimmy Saville might remark (thats lost the rest of the World in one go).

Our popular understanding of the universe is that its big. Really big. To paraphrase Douglas Adams, you might think its a long way to the shops but thats peanuts compared to the universe. At least as far as we can see.

And its getting bigger from where we're looking - and not only that, its expanding in every direction. Thats some weird stuff right there.

But, I propose that the universe is actually very, very small. Small enough in fact that it occupies no more space than would an electron, if an electron occupied any space at all, or for long, from our point of view.

Further that this by no means represents a scaled down version of the universe as we see it such that the relative distances and sizes are maintained, but that in fact the entire mass/energy whatsit of the universe is compressed tight into a ball so that any one of us might right now reach out and touch the other side of the universe, which is situated right next to us, on that sofa the cat loves to scratch.

I propose that it is solely because of our existence in three spatial and one time dimension that we observe the universe as we understand it, as being very big and expanding in all directions. That it is a matter of perspective. That if we had the benefit of all umpteen dimensions and the perspective they provide, my theory would be shown to be true.

This clearly demonstrates my genius, not to mention hope for apparent inter-galactic travel and time travel being realities once the ignorance of scientists today is remedied by my vision. If that is it is ignorance and not some conspiracy to keep us all in the dark as to the truth.

Ok, LadyE.  You need to cut down on the mind altering substances a little, methinks.  [:)][8D]

Your theory seems as good as any, LadyE. I don't venture so far, but I believe we live in a universe full of energies we are utterly ignorant of. Some few might catch ripples and reflections of them from the corner of the eye, but none of us are capable of actually comprehending any of it.

Good luck with the math. [;)]

what is sort of funny is that you are materially pretty close to right on target imo.

everything we know could be no larger then a marble on the table and a solid substance to something else.

Just because we cannot travel easily through a hunk of iron does not mean an alpha particle has the same difficulty for example.

Sounded pretty good until you got to time travel which can easily be proven a bit out there. :)

In the immortal words of hawking: a time machine will be built someday, but has not yet been built, so the tourists from the future cannot reach this far back in time.

gotta love him!

It's all about perspective, when it comes down to it. The Universe is big compared to what? OR small compared to what. There is literally nothing else to compare it to. And it is bigger than anything in it (includign electrons). Or else our Idea of Universe is so flawed it is meaningless.

Times doesn't actually flow the way we percieve it either, that really blows my mind.

The secret is to be stoned pretty much all the time. Then you get brilliant ideas all the time and can beat others to the copyright and patent claims. If only you maintain conciousness and cohererence longggg enough of cccccccckdap] ;e[ojdo

The type of your post reminded me of another "hard to wrap my head around" theory.  Is Our Universe Inside Another Larger Universe?

A wormhole is a hypothetical "tunnel" connecting two different points in spacetime, and in theory, at each end of the wormhole there could be two universes. Theoretical physicist Nikodem Poplawski from Indiana University has taken things a step further by proposing that perhaps our universe could be located within the interior of a wormhole which itself is part of a black hole that lies within a much larger universe.
Whoa. I may have just lost my bearings. As crazy as the concept of wormholes sounds, it does offer solutions to the equations of Einstein's general theory of relativity. In fact, wormholes – also called an Einstein-Rosen Bridge — offer such a great solution that some theorists think that real wormholes may eventually be found or even created, and perhaps they could even be used for high-speed travel between two areas in space, or maybe even time travel.
However, a known property of wormholes is that they are highly unstable and would probably collapse instantly if even the tiniest amount of matter, such as a single photon, tried to travel though them.
But would it work – and could matter exist — if we were inside a wormhole inside a black hole inside another universe? Poplawski thinks so. He takes advantage of the Euclidean-based coordinate system called isotropic coordinates to describe the gravitational field of a black hole and to model the radial geodesic motion of a massive particle into a black hole.
"This condition would be satisfied if our universe were the interior of a black hole existing in a bigger universe," Poplawski said. "Because Einstein's general theory of relativity does not choose a time orientation, if a black hole can form from the gravitational collapse of matter through an event horizon in the future then the reverse process is also possible. Such a process would describe an exploding white hole: matter emerging from an event horizon in the past, like the expanding universe."
So, a white hole would be connected to a black hole a wormhole, and is hypothetically the time reversal of a black hole. (Oh my, I'm now dizzy…)
Poplawski's paper suggests that all astrophysical black holes, not just Schwarzschild and Einstein-Rosen black holes, may have Einstein-Rosen bridges, each with a new universe inside that formed simultaneously with the black hole.
"From that it follows that our universe could have itself formed from inside a black hole existing inside another universe," he said.

Be careful LadyE, Douglas Adams also wrote: There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened. ;-)

That may just explain my presence and weird ideas LA. I must have already replaced the universe, what with being bizarre and inexplicable its the only aspect that makes any sense.

Not really, not at all.  Your weird thinking (hardly ordinary) reminded me of this weird thing!

..... so ill just pop off to the moon then - be back in 5!

its all relative isnt it.  the universe might be floating about in some super galactic test tube - or residing in a locker somewhere (Men in Black 11) - but its still phucking huge to us and i still cant get to the moon without a rocket [&o]

LadyEllen -> RE: Multi dimensional cosmic weirdness (5/18/2010 5:36:52 AM)

But Lally, the moon is right next to you in the umpteenth dimension
