Ok. Not so shocking really. In fact, utterly predictable. President Obama's aunt who was ordered deported in 2004, but stayed in her subsidized Boston housing instead, has been granted asylum to remain in the country.

C'mon. What else was going to happen? Politically, the timing could have been better for the administration.

Dunno, Rich.

Family can be a real burden. They can put you in no-win situations.

I'd give him the benefit of the doubt in this case.

Firm

I think that it is shameful the way that Pres. Obama has pretty muched shunned her while she acted as his "guide" when he visited Kenya.  Of course, he was not that compassionate to his grandmother in Hawaii when she was on her deathbed.  30 minutes or so with granny and then off for some surfing.

I find this all very sad, actually.

not surprised in the slightest, or at the resulting outcry, just a matter of time:)
Edited to add: not aimed at this thread  in any way...

I'm not suggesting he was in any way involved in influencing the ruling of the court, Firm, but it does present a no-win. I'm much more interested in the politics than the personalities.

there is still time to reconsider

Shouldn't you be doing your laps in the pool, Real?

Seems reasonable to me based on Obama being president now.

FTA:
Ms. Wong has argued all along that if she were forced to return to Kenya, she would face undue attention and perhaps danger because her nephew was so famous; in order to be granted asylum, people must show that they would face persecution in their home countries.

I think it helped her win because nothing is inappropriate.

I was thinking the same thing, but he never really knew his father, and it's not like he was close with that side of the family. They were separated by the Atlantic.

That being said he could have at least said hi and given her a hug or something at the inauguration, and the fact that he returned her campaign donations seems like he's ashamed of being related to her or something.
