You make it worse because by constantly bringing it up because your show your fear of it and in so doing inspire more extremist nuts to carry out such action. They see this as the most effective way to get their point across.

In the beginning there was one mad man who killed in the name of his religion, not the first, not the last.

In terms of publicity for his actions it could have ended there but the western media loves to create this image of a popular movement and so one man becomes a few more. They do it because you fear it, my view is that not constantly highlighting isolated incidents as an organised movement would make those with extreme beliefs feel even extreme acts aren't going to get them a hearing if they don't deserve one.

You are pandering to their attention seeking with all this and just reaffirming their view that extreme acts get them heard.

Are you suggesting we should be quiet? The cartoons were inspired by the fanatical clerics and the suicide bombings, not the other way round. Saying nothing, making no commentary would not, for one minute, diminish their actions or activity. This day in particular is about that freedom of speech, the freedom to comment and - fundamental to any true perspective of freedom - the willingness to stand up to threats in the name of that speech. To whit, if Comedy Central had not bowed to the threats of these terrorists, this day would not exist. The fact that terrorists were successful in silencing commentary through threats of death and torture is why the movement behind this day was started, why it exists. It is an act of solidarity with the Danish cartoonists, and an example for others to follow that he who would sacrifice freedom for safety will possess neither (apologies to Mr Franklin).

It is not, as you say, a question of fear. It is a question of courage.

To be followed by the Mapplethorpe Piss on a Crucifix Day, no doubt.

Have you ever seen that image? It's BEAUTIFUL.

I was paraphrasing the "don't provoke them, they might kill you" sentiments on this thread, it really seems to me like a lot of people are saying that radical threats of violence are somehow justifiable if someone pokes fun at your religion.

Where is the post that says that?

realcoolhand -> RE: Draw Mohammed Day is near (5/22/2010 7:21:24 PM)

And it was "Piss Christ," by the by.

realcoolhand -> RE: Draw Mohammed Day is near (5/22/2010 7:23:24 PM)

And to go off topic, I have no problem with the prophet; he was, by all accounts, a decent man. Cared for the poor, if nothing else. Too bad it's come to what it has (I mean, what IS so special about 9th century arabia?) but oh well; live and let live, I say. And unnecessary thumbs in the eye are generally reserved for bad sports.

At one time anyone who dared to trash the christian thing was dealt a severe blow, but now trashing that religion seems to be an ok thing and all that given freedom af thought and speech is now championed and that the religious authorites have thankfully lost their power, but although the following of Islam is a minority belief in a country and so lttle threat beyond the idealist nutcase, what is it with you guys, do you look for trouble ?

Now I as a rule believe in live and let live, I live my life as I see fit without others intervention, fine, I will leave others to live their life as they see fit without intervention, it is that simple. Never will I feel the need to ridicule another's belief for the fun of it, or I feel the need to attack, as people's beliefs are their own to have. I may question in order to seek an answer for my own understanding, but out right ridicule, no, that is not me. It does bother me though, those without belief, why is it they seek to destroy what others believe in.

If it is a change of belief that is desired, ridiculing what a person believes is not the way to go about it. But of those that call for a draw Mohammed day, that stinks of ridicule despite any other reason, for it will bring out those that have an axe to grind and as a result expose that country as an offensive country, of which people who are not connected may feel a person's wrath.

The ridicule of religious beliefs should be outlawed, as it is not conducive to living with any modicum of tolerance to the combined divisions in society.

Interesting that the source of the provocation in this case comes from within fortress America, I get the impression that some US citizens believe the good 'ole US of A is so well protected that they can say and do what they wish to offend others without fear of retribution. But as has been seen around the world, otherĀ  people of the nation that permitted the insult to occur often feel the anger when outside of fortress America.

Why do you endanger your own people ?

I liked thunderfoots video explaining the sentiment behind draw Muhammad day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7ok4njJXI8

Anyway, I haven't found too many of the drawings yet, anybody know sites where they ended up?

Discussing the prophet himself and what he did or didn't do during the formative years of Islam is a great way to set fire to the thread. Suffice to say "by all accounts" is an incredibly large exaggeration. Let's leave it at that, shall we, and try to keep the thread more or less on topic and functional.

None of those posts say what you alluded they did. One suggests that we are always looking to stick our nose in the business of others.

One suggests that by provoking extremists there might be consequences.

Again you prove you have a problem making sense of things with any form of accuracy.

It also suggests that we make it illegal to mock religion, as if the responsibility for the actions of extremists lies with us and not the extremists themselves.

That being said, I don't understand why you would waste your time talking to someone who you feel lacks basic comprehension skills. It's almost as if you seek that shit out.
