pahunkboy -> tooth pull - sick? (5/20/2010 10:14:30 AM)

curious- I had a tooth break- upper molar- and had it pulled. They did not use enough novacain and I felt dizzy.  in fact the whole rest of the day I was light headed.  The dentist asked if I was on any blood thinners.

There was no special instructions for after care.

So I was sick for a few days and it is either that or worry.

Any thoughts??

From what i can remember i didn't get any special instruction other than the basic keep your mouth clean. I do remember feeling a little lightheaded or off for a day or two. About the getting sick part i think might be kinda normal. My kid gets sick almost every time he he looses a tooth. When i asked my dentist about it he said that it was most likely because of the bacteria in the gums and under the tooth being released when the tooth comes out.

That makes sense.  I dont have much of an appetite.   I screamed when it was pulled.  Luckily it is in the past.

What do you mean?   Dental is separate.

PaHunk, do they still use novocain? My Dentist uses lidocain.

blueeyedbbwsub -> RE: tooth pull - sick? (5/20/2010 2:09:50 PM)

I had a tooth pulled yesterday. 5 needles and 100% laughing gas. When I got over the ginormous anxiety/panic attack I thought to ask what I needed to do:

a) don't rinse (DUH!!!)
b) take advil as necesarry (no pain I was told, yeah right i thought, wow very little pain as reality....who'da thunk???) [:)]

Just before office closing i had the bright idea to find out more:
1) gauze could be taken out (shoulda been told "yanked", much better fit to the situation)
2) no drinking through straws because...k, still don't know why but stopped
3) no smoking....like that's gonna happen, so i cut back

Now I've got less than no energy, all I want to do is sleep and not think about anything. Which I've managed to do so far today. And I'll do that until I feel better. For now, I deal with the exhausted part of me that only wants to sleep. I take advil to take away the bit of pain. And I don't spend too much time thinking. Even doing that leaves me weary.

You ROCK.  Thanks to you and all who replied.

I dont think I rinsed enough.  Today tho I rinsed with baking soda and water.  I did not need any pain pills.

The reason for no straws or smoking is dry sockets and believe me if you have one, you will know it!

She called it novacain.  I chatted with my neighbor.  She says she gets antibiotices prior to work done.  Wow.

Not to mention the possibility to bust stitch(es) - which I learned the hard way.  Then again I was trying to suck chicken noodle soup through a crazy straw at the time.

sirsholly -> RE: tooth pull - sick? (5/20/2010 4:39:05 PM)

Pa...some have to take antibiotics if they have had certain illnesses in the past, such as Scarlett Fever.

As to using a straw, I was told you can easily suck out the blood clot that forms in the cavity. Without the clot, a dry socket can develop

kiwisub12 -> RE: tooth pull - sick? (5/20/2010 4:41:28 PM)

using a straw is a no-no because it creates suction in the mouth and can disturb the clot over the hole - which if disturbed won't heal over - and voila! - a dry socket! If you have tonsils out you are given the same instructions for the same reason.

The probable reason the neighbour gets antibiotics before dental work is mitral valve prolapse, since dental work can cause a shower of bacteria in the blood, leading (possibly) to bacterial endocarditis. Very bad juju!

Sorry Hunky, you're probably outta luck.  This was back in the '70s, dentists generally don't give Percodan anymore.
