I don't watch TV news. I don't claim to be Mr. Informed either, but I prefer reading as my source of information.

Anyway, I spent about 2.5 hours the past two days in government waiting rooms, and the wonk bureaucrats have decided that Americans need a TV in such places, and they've also decided that CNN is the channel of choice.

So, I had CNN as background noise for 2.5 hours, and I must say its like listening to someone who never shuts up. If had a choice between watching a 24 hour news channel or throwing my TV out the window -- my TV would be long gone.

Television news has become ubiquitous in many public spaces such as airports and even elevators.  Quite invasive and noxious.

I listen to NPR or read. I'm in front of computer monitors too long to watch cable.

Same. NPR or Twitter. If you follow the right folks on Twitter, you'll know what's going on before CNN tells you.

You gotta follow the right folks. I follow all the members of congress and senate and all the media dudes I can grab. I don't follow any celebrities.

Makes for a really interesting day, every day.

2.5 hours and you let it get to you Cloudboy?

What a wimp.

I spent 6 days recovering from surgery in the Czech Republic, with CNN my only English speaking channel. OK, I could have watched Austrian or German TV and followed it - but European mainland TV is god-awful let me tell you; failing high school students do better in their ICT classes.

6 days, averaging about 16 hours a day - I was on my own and needed the company. After 3 days I knew exactly what the schedule was, the words of every repeated feature, trailer and ad. And I came out no more insane than when I went in.

AM radio can be a hoot. I like NPR while cooking.

L.E., why did you have surgery in the Czeck Rep. instead of in England?

I guess it depends where you are, when I got stuck at the Social security office for about 3 hours they had FOX News on and no way to change the channel.

just depends on your area and who ever gets to pick the channel

As for the TV news, none of it is telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth.  When news became big money, it's all about ratings, not truth, but whatever keeps people watching

I intentionally watch BBC24 and BBC parliament more than any other tv channel, often have it on as background noise if my headphones are off. Maybe I'm just weird.

@Popeye, probably not the full answer but the EU nations accept each others national insurance systems these days.

It was elective surgery P, not covered by the NHS. CZ was $3k inc flights, GB (10 miles from here) was $9k.

The surgery I had you can get on the NHS but only after a mastectomy.

To me there is just so much empty commentary and reporting --- following stories that "break" instead of unearthing stories that are out there, untold. If I had to sound bite it, CNN struck me as simply gossiping about shit that happens or might happen.
