i just returned from a required round trip to the mid-west (won't go into details regarding why) and i have some problems with a couple of things. the trip required 4 airplanes and at the airports, the boarding process went as followed:

Military personnel boarded first
Priority SkyMiles persons were boarded next
Persons requiring assistance (elderly & handicapped) were boarded third
then everyone else to follow

personally, i have a problem with this. i believe that the persons requiring assistance should ALWAYS be boarded first. not really sure how i feel about the military personnel and the order they should be boarded (playing it safe here to prevent flaming).

Secondly, in all 4 flights, before the "safety lecture" the head flight attendants thanked all the military personnel for "their continued efforts in defending 'our country'". now, i will say that i do not agree with this (let the flaming begin) as i do not see how their fighting in some other country has anything to do with "Defending Our Country". this is BS and made me a bit upset and angry (yes, i admit i got angry over this and still am)

if they were actually fighting HERE in THIS COUNTRY, then i would agree with this sign of honor and gratitude, but they AREN'T.

now i will sit back and let the flaming begin.

Cool.  I'm first.

You do realize that an endeavor such as signing up with the US Military isn't a pick and chose kind of employment.  You don't get to decide which conflicts you'll participate and which ones you don't.  Those same people that you resent for being deployed overseas are the same ones who would be fighting for you in your backyard if this was ever an occupied territory.

As strange as it is to have to say on a BDSM site, those people obey.  That's what they signed up for.  Whether you "approve" of their service has about as much to do with it as you deciding that someone's Master isn't really in charge of the slave.

Why are they boarded first?  There's a couple of logical reasons for that.

No matter where they are coming from, if they are connecting from an international flight, they have not only been traveling in many cases for 24 hours, but many of them have been farther from home for a much longer time than you were.  They are exhausted and have been away from their family and loved ones.  That airline seat that you probably found terribly uncomfortable was most likely a hell of a lot more relaxing than the places that they've had guard duty over the last year.

Next, there is also the point of not needing assistance.  They can stow whatever they've brought with them and clear the aisle so other people can board.  When it's the other way around, the aisle is blocked and more people need to wait to be seated longer than necessary.

Also, everything they are carrying has been checked multiple times, often even going through customs.

One last thing.  In more cases than not, the complete strangers that walk up to My husband specifically for the purpose of thanking him for his service, more often than not, are senior citizens.

If they were fighting here in this country you would not be flying, so no chance to thank them.  If it will make you feel better think of it as a pre-emptive thank you for risking their lives, and remember no matter the order you board you will all arrive at your destination at the same time.

i don't resent them being overseas as much as the fact that people are saying they are defending OUR COUNTRY (i don't see them defending the USA...they are defending some other country)

Oh.  In that case, if it's not them, exactly who is defending our country?  I guess you think that a prepared military suddenly appears only when it should suit you.

Regardless of semantics, they ARE risking their lives for what our country has ordered them to do and would do the same if it was here. If you don't agree with what the country has decided to do, take it up with the politicians. They are soldiers, they have no choice. Hell, giving them first seats on a plane and recognizing their sacrifice for our country is nothing but a gesture which doesn't come close to the recognition they deserve.

Another thought you might want to consider.....their presence on that plane ensures a feeling of safety to many people that are still not so sure about flying. They are good business to those airlines.

they are overseas...that's NOT defending OUR country...it's defending THEIRS. i don't feel they should be over there, they should be here. America is NOT the world police. let them deal with their own problems themselves and let's adopt a "Prime Directive" of non-interference.

personally, i felt more like a target than being secure. afterall, who would be the first to get taken out in the event of a hijacking? the military. i have never supported dying in another country in the BS guise of "Defending Our Country". it's total BS...always has been...always will be.

The plane isn't going to take off any sooner, so what does it matter if they let the people who haven't slept in 30+ hours, had descent sleep or seen their loved ones in 15 months, board the plane 15 minutes ahead of some others, while the flight attendants are still getting the plane ready for the other passengers ?

Ok, so lets not honor policemen unless they are fighting crime right at that second. And firemen, unless they are putting out a fire they deserve no respect from the general public. I bet you hope the men and women in either of these professions will be there when you need them. How about doctors? Eh, they're no better than a homeless bum unless they're elbows deep in a tricky surgery. I bet you've needed a doctor or two in your lifetime-how nice that they were there when you needed them.

Military personnel don't generally get to pick where they go, they go where they're sent. I'm sure most of them would rather stay close to their loved ones. I know my son would but he signed up to do a job and he does it wherever he is told to go. Regardless of how you feel OP, he is still out there guarding your back and watching out for you. No matter how you treat him and if you feel he doesn't deserve any respect from you - he still protects you so you can sleep at night. He's out there risking his life in place of yours and your own loved ones....how special of you to proclaim that he shouldn't get any special recognition for that.

you're all missing the point, so let me put it in plain English for those of you who actually understand it:

Iraq is NOT a part of America. just as Vietnam, Korea or any other country are NOT part of America.

Cops, firemen, doctors or any other similar profession do so HERE IN AMERICA. i am simply saying that those soldiers are NOT fighting for America, they are fighting for Iraq (and what other countries are involved). Now, the National Guard are HERE and doing their job HERE. America's military should stay HERE...not die in some foreign country that is NOT part of HERE (America). do we have comprehension yet?

All U.S. military bases in Korea and other countries are on United States soil. No papers, no entry. Same federal laws and soda pops.

You don't have to like the military, but please remember those are people in those uniforms. And realize that seeing the flight attendants dust buster the seats is no great thrill.

and what does this have to do with airlines or flying?

IN this case, I think it's meant more as shorthand for 'defending the American ideals of democracy, freedom of speech, and those other rights we - as Americans - so often take for granted, and would like to see take hold elsewhere in the world'

Defending America is so much shorter, and wouldn't delay the departure as long...

An airport said " Thanks to our troops " and that frazzles your life ? Lucky you.

Air travel is unpleasant for most people . That's life .

Yes Mikey, we all get it. We just happen to disagree with your view of what they are doing.

I'm really surprised though, that you aren't also furious that military personnel in uniform don't have to pay to check their bags.
