Congress Considers Quarter-Trillion in New Spending This Week

With the federal deficit already projected to hit $1.37 trillion for 2010, Congress will consider two proposals this week that would take that number as much as a quarter of a trillion dollars higher.

The bills -- a package of tax cuts and safety-net provisions in the House, and an emergency spending bill to pay for fighting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan -- are already facing bipartisan opposition, both because of the programs being funded and the sheer dollar amounts that lawmakers are being asked to approve in an election year. (And it's an election year that has already seen several high-spending incumbents sent packing by voters anxious over unprecedented levels of federal spending.)

Status: offline 		This morning, the debt in the US topped 13 trillion dollars and 100 billion per month is added to that total. Congress and the Obama administration better wake up.

I think it is more like the American people better wake and decide what they can do without.

It's a no-win situation for politicians.

If they decide to make cuts in programs the public screams, if they decide to raise taxes the public screams.

Status: offline 		A no win for the politicians ? They were elected to do a job. To do the right thing for America. They continue to do just the opposite. They are more worried about keeping their cushy jobs than doing what is the right for the country as a whole.

You missed a key word rml.

It should read; "If they decide to make cuts in entitlement programs, the entitlement recipients in the public scream. - LET THEM!

After their done - maybe they'll be motivated to replace their lost entitlement with effort and result. BTW - That was pointed to both the personal and well as corporate entitlement recipients.

Tell you what - for political correctness sake, start at the corporate level - immediately cut off ALL subsidies, end price supports, eliminate government purchase of excess production, and direct payment to all industries and corporations. End all 'public service' announcements, advertising for military service, as well as any government payout for the 'arts', 'radio', and 'TV'. Cut all Federal program in duplicity with State bureaucracies such as the Department of Education. If that's not enough - end all government oversight for personal choice and eliminate the FCC. Who know - there may be enough savings to keep some of the more appropriate personal entitlement programs in place.

Meanwhile, the debt increases - per citizen it is now $42,026. Pointing to the big problem and the elephant in the room that the current Administration doesn't want to address, the number is $117,984 for each tax PAYER.

Corporate and individual tax receivers are doing okay. Tax payers? Well if the same standards applied to polar bears were used - are being hunted into extinction.

Exactly what is the right thing?  What you believe it is?

If the people themselves have no clear consensus on what should be done how do you expect Congress to be any different?
