truckinslave -> Plug the damn hole!!! (5/26/2010 8:53:41 AM)

Ear Leader recently said something like the title, and I for once and probably only once cannot disagree.

Has anyone seen a discussion of simply blowing it up? It seems to me that drpping millions of pounds (or tons)
of rock and seabed into the hole might be preferable to letting it spew for months. It further seems to me that exactly that could be accomplished by one little nuclear egg shoved partway down the well.

mnottertail -> RE: Plug the damn hole!!! (5/26/2010 9:25:03 AM)

Yeah, we certainly don't want to nuke it we have enough poisonous material to deal with, and sometimes when you blow shit up, it don't all fall in the hole, so now you are leaking radiation as well as oil, but thanks for the theory, Einstein.

You could try conventional, sure.

pahunkboy -> RE: Plug the damn hole!!! (5/26/2010 9:48:01 AM)

Why cant it be vacuumed up?

mnottertail -> RE: Plug the damn hole!!! (5/26/2010 9:53:56 AM)

They are doing some vacuuming, but cant keep up the rate, and there aren't scads of vacuum tankers sitting around......they have to go to shore to offload the mixture and it has to be processed.....so its an available equipment against size of spill issue

pahunkboy -> RE: Plug the damn hole!!! (5/26/2010 9:55:08 AM)

then we have cheap oil and that might be GOOD?

DCWoody -> RE: Plug the damn hole!!! (5/26/2010 10:05:02 AM)

God damnit americans, 'Let's nuke it' is your solution to everything.

Lucylastic -> RE: Plug the damn hole!!! (5/26/2010 10:07:34 AM)

with no regard to the aftermath....

I doubt a nuke is appropriate. and it was a Russian who wanted that.  Us Americans are a humble and simple people.

We ask for nothing from anybody.

Hey now, I'm an American and I KNOW it's a BAD idea.  We're not all that crazy.

Think it thru hunkie, that is gonna be the most expensive oil ever extracted.

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Plug the damn hole!!! (5/26/2010 10:34:20 AM)

A small nuclear warhead might actually work, in the same sense that blowing your jaw off with a shotgun will solve the problem of an infected tooth. But there's no guarantee that it would work in that particular geological formation, and if it doesn't, the result would be that you've just turned a relatively small hole into an extremely large hole. And even if it does work, all you've done is replace an oil-pollution disaster with a radiation-contamination disaster. So what have you solved?

Conventional explosives? Definitely would not work. The only effect they would have would be to blow off the wellhead, which is the only thing restricting the flow. BP's estimate of the maximum capacity of a total blowout on that well if they completely lose the wellhead? 170,000 barrels a day. That's an Exxon Valdez every 30 hours or so for the next 2 or 3 months, until they get the relief wells drilled. This is one problem that can't be solved with M-80s and cherry bombs.

What is it- a weeks worth?

Lucylastic -> RE: Plug the damn hole!!! (5/26/2010 11:06:58 AM)

I think plugging the damn hole with the top 10 or 12 bosses of BP would do the trick, the guys who cut corners or those who gave the orders or ignored warnings
if thats not enough, send down a bunch of drill baby drill proponents.

How about a fuel/air explosive? The liquid gas ones? I think they can get those up to most of a megatonne now.

You think that is bad. One guy on the silver board swears WE are over re-acting- that the puddles of oil fell off a barge and is normal- that this is a liberal media scam to rob FL of tourism.

Who knew?

FAEs need air - huge quantities of oxygen - and there isn't any at 5000 feet below the surface. They work by mixing the fuel with the atmosphere, so they need atmosphere to work.

Moonhead -> RE: Plug the damn hole!!! (5/26/2010 11:23:15 AM)

I see. I'd thought that they'd have liquid oxygen or compressed air mixed in with the other tinned stuff they use.

SirPumpy -> RE: Plug the damn hole!!! (5/26/2010 11:30:57 AM)

Send in Mythbusters I say!

They are good at blowing stuff up.............

And I suspect more than one of em are Kinksters

Well, the way it works is, the fuel has to mix with the air and form a huge cloud, of several thousand cubic meters. You just can't get that effect at the pressures you'd find at 5,000 feet below the surface. The only way a nuke would work (assuming it even would work) is if you could drill down to a point well below the sea floor and place the warhead very close to the drillhole. You could never drill a big enough hole to accommodate a fuel-air explosive.

pahunkboy -> RE: Plug the damn hole!!! (5/26/2010 11:54:45 AM)

...and we could always audit HARRP.
