*sad*

The fact that Atlantis will be retiring is just part of what happens to fleet vehicles when they age and is to be expected. What's sad is that the US human spaceflight program has no replacement vehicle ready to immediately take its place.

Atlantis will be turned around to be made flight-ready, to be used as a rescue shuttle should one of the two remaining missions run into problems. There's also the possibility that it'll be used for one or two additional ISS supply runs next year but that's not for certain.

At least Atlantis will be able to join its predecessor, Enterprise, in retirement... intact.

i talked to a friend of mine in clearwater this am.  she said she sat and waited for the "boom" of it going over, but it didnt happen.  she figured it took the southern approach.

seems like yesterday, challenger took our breath away and made us cry huh?

damn, time flies! how the hell did it get to be 2010?

Challenger and Columbia... both took my breath away. They still do. I wasn't old enough to feel the impact of Apollo One but knowing how I felt with the two shuttles, I'm sure that one would have taken my breath away too.
