tigreetsa -> The Six Commitments of WIITWD (5/27/2010 7:18:56 PM)

The first commitment is to your health, and thus to the best of your abilities and your circumstances maintaining the best of your physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual health and wellbeing. Your health is perhaps the most important aspect of your life, as it affects directly your ability to live. It's also vitally important in WIITWD, because if you cannot show that you can take adequate care of your own health - given your age, circumstances and abilities - nobody is going to entrust you with taking care of them.

The second commitment is to be connected with people, to be able to relate to other people and understand them, and to communicate in a way where they can understand you. This involves not judging people until you have put yourself in their shoes and seen things from their perspective. The idea here is to see yourself in other people and to see others within yourself. Being connected with other people isn't just having a profile up on Collarme or Fetlife, it doesn't mean being especially well-known or popular, but it means having a network of people both in real time and online with whom you interact.

The third commitment is to understand that your thoughts and your feelings have an effect on your speech, actions and behaviour and that your emotional, psychological and spiritual development is just as important as your physical development and wellbeing. What is inside your head and your heart is projected outwards, and comes through all what you say, all what you express and all what you do in emotional cues and signals which other people pick up on.

The fourth commitment is to understand that the true nature of a person doesn't lie in their appearance, social position or even their words, but within their inner nature and soul. This goes back to being connected with other people and not being too quick to make judgments, and it also involves finding that balance between the demands of your inner nature and soul and those of others and the outside world.

The fifth commitment is one to stand by your decisions and objectives once made, even in the face of daunting adversity and opposition, and to follow through on your decisions and commitments once made until either they become reality or you discover and admit that you were wrong. This involves keeping control of your own mind and holding out for what you really want, rather than submitting to what you perceive everyone else wants, and to holding yourself responsible for all what you say, do and think. This involves learning to cope with and handle rejection and failure, disappointments, things not turning out as you expect, and instead of blaming others, this website and people in general take it as an opportunity to learn, to grow and to develop.

The sixth and final commitment is to being open and positive towards people and the world around you, to be an active participant in a community, and to take part in, share and give to others that sense of a community. The basic principle of WIITWD is that you give of yourself before you can receive and this is generally the master key which unlocks and opens the many doors you will come across in WIITWD.

Just that none of those should be specific to WIITWD.

LadyAngelika -> RE: The Six Commitments of WIITWD (5/27/2010 7:34:56 PM)

If I one day sit down and write my own personal code for living, I'm sure most of what you wrote, I would write in my own words, but I agree with camille that this goes way beyond WIITWD.

ditto in fact I would disagree with them for "what it is that I do", however, I would agree with 90% of them for what I do overall in life as a whole.

barelynangel -> RE: The Six Commitments of WIITWD (5/27/2010 7:41:49 PM)

I was trying to figure out how to indicate that these aren't committments or a mantra for WIITWD, these are concepts that are very internal and very individualized for people.  To indicate them as a general rule to me would advocate putting people in a box rather than allowing the individual to thrive as unique.

Also, its a little kumbyaish for me.

You really need to get out more.
I would diagnose a case  of over acute piety

I have something like that but it is one sentence.

Have you read The Four Agreements Stella?

DesFIP -> RE: The Six Commitments of WIITWD (5/28/2010 3:51:43 AM)

And those of us in less than stellar health, either physical or mental? Does that mean we shouldn't engage in wiitwd?

And the second one appears to indicate that anyone with any disorder that makes it difficult to connect with others; social phobias, aspergers etc aren't welcome here either.

Did you read the same OP that I read? In the first paragraph, she said..."thus to the best of your abilities and your circumstances maintaining the best of your physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual health and wellbeing."

Now why can't someone in less than stellar health still maintain good health to the best of their abilities?

The second paragraph talked about not judging others and the importance of good communications. Now I agree that someone with a disorder that makes it difficult to connect is going to have problems communicating, but that is the fault of their disorder. It's not Stellas fault. No where did she say they shouldn't be welcome.

To address the OP, I agree with the others that it isn't specific to WIITWD, but it was very interesting and I agree with the basic concepts outlined.

leadership527 -> RE: The Six Commitments of WIITWD (5/28/2010 8:57:18 AM)

Sheez, obviously I'm not doing this correctly. The only thing I committed to was to "not be a dumbass". Then again, both Carol and I tend to be the pragmatic sorts. I think I could reasonably argue that all things you listed would fall under the category of "avoiding dumbassery" in my head.

Personally (and this is my own opinions only), I think that way too many people involved in WIITWD pile up layers and layers of interpretations and meanings and symbology and words and rituals and practices and concepts till the underlying truth is completely obscured in fluff. I would've written this all something akin to:

Consider that you will attract life partners similar to yourself and act accordingly.

This is really the only part of the whole thing that should be simply removed.  Not everyone wants or finds something to be good for them in a community, certianly not kinky.

The rest seems find but I'm generally against those credo lists of things.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: The Six Commitments of WIITWD (5/28/2010 10:46:20 AM)

Excellent thoughts, Stella, but I have to say with the others that they apply to life in general. But you knew that already!! [;)]

Yes and you guessed rightly, I did know that already.

I was actually trying to make a point - only it hasn't worked out the way I thought it would. Oh well.

Of course none of it had anything to do with BDSM or WIITWD because both are essentially about people and about relationships

But then so too is living. Can you think of anything which doesn't involve a relationship with you, with someone else, or with people in general?

Each and every person here is an individual. So is their life and life experiences. So too are their relationships.

Therefore any attempt at coming up with any sort of theory is nothing more than the sharing of one's own personal perspective at best, at worst it is the One True Way - a bit like religion or politics.

A theory is no more than an idea, a principle, an observation, a hypothesis, you still have to go through the experiences.

My OP isn't a theory of anything, certainly not of WIITWD, I don't have any theories so please don't ask me or expect me to come up with one. You may be able to apply those six things to WIITWD, you may not, it depends on you, your personal perspective, and your experience.

All I can offer, like anyone else here, is an opinion and the sharing of my experiences. Nothing more.

I don't think that's true at all.

I have a lot of theories about a lot of things.  When I use the concept it means "I have this nugget of an idea about how things work that seems to make sense but I haven't really experienced enough or focused enough or researched enough to give it the real weight to stand on its own yet, but I think it's still an idea worth mentioning so I'll put it out there."

Many of my theories have eventually shown to be very accurate and well worth becoming solid statements on their own.  Some have shown to be empty.
