These are the types of research using stem cells that will prove beneficial to mankind. I look forward to further discoveries and innovations in the medical field. Retina Created From Human Embryonic Stem Cells Scientists have created an eight-layer, early-stage retina from human embryonic stem cells, the first three-dimensional tissue structure to be made from stem cells. The researchers are testing the early-stage retinas in animal models to learn how much they improve vision. Good news, thanks. I wonder if the newfangled retina has a fovea (renamed macula) and if it has a similar distribution of rods and cones, as well as the blind spot which is basically the connection point for the optic nerve. They don't give all that much detail. What I am unsure of though, is if they can overlay it somehow on one's extant neural map within the eyeball. If so a plethora of problems are summarily solved. What is very promising though, is that such a home brew retina is not likely to have many immunolocigal factors, and therefore should not require extreme immunosuppression to avoid rejection, resulting in an overall much more desirable prognosis. Unfortunately though, it is likely to take decades for this technology to trickle down and benefit the common person. It's not like there are going to be signs posted "Blind people show up in Memphis on Tuesday" to say the least. And of course there are a plethora of problems to be overcome. But it is a step in the right direction. T

I have a coworker whos 22 year old son just had a serious spinal injury from a motorcycle wreck. If the dubya administration hadnt killed stem cell research, that boy might be able to walk some day.

HW, you know what's worse ? Those people have no religion whatsoever. Never did and never will. Nothing they do is even because of misguided morality, for they have none. In short it is not that they don't want stem cell research, they don't want us to have the benefits of it. They want it private. Proving me wrong would require access to each and every research facility in the world in case anyone is interested in trying. T

T I'd suspect it's more trying to look like they have religion to endear themselves to the fundamentalist flat earthers than wanting to keep any benefits purely to themselves. That said, there is (as you point out) quite a bit of stem cell research going still going on, it just is mostly taking place outside of America now. Something else your last government has handed over to the Asian economies. Pity Obama doesn't have the balls to try to pull the plug on that, but I suppose in this context bipartisan means that both parties spend a lot of their time on their knees in front of Pat Robertson.
