This is absurd. Tell me how you're going to guide a sinking ship down to an exact location. I suppose he plans on having 4 subs on all sides chained to it, and gradually lower it.

A better idea is to tunnel a 300 foot hole right next to the casing, and explode a torpedo or bomb next to it, and hope it will collapse back in on itself.

If that's too dangerous then the relief well is the only answer, and until then they should have skimmer ships skimming it off as it comes to the surface.

Is it unprecedented? There was that spill off the coast of Korea a couple of years back.

Thanks. I knew I hadn't imagined that one. A tanker not a well, then.

Kim said about 6,000 people, including government personnel, local residents and volunteers, were expected to participate, nearly triple the number Saturday./snip

How many are on our spill?

Nobody. BP can't be arsed doing anything, and nobody else wants to accept any responsibility for their mess. Brilliant, isn't it?

Sounds incredibly arrogant and corrupt.

And there lies the truth about corporate anything, they like to make money at the expense of everything else, but when it comes to spending money without return, they lose interest.

This one is already over 10 times as large as that one, and equaling it approximately every 4 and a half days. It looks as though it will probably wind up being the second largest oil spill in history. Not quite unprecedented, but pretty darned close.

Fingas and the anonymous consultant weren't terribly enthused about any of the concepts brought forward by Slate readers. "Not one of these is a practical solution or hasn't been tried already," said Fingas, while the anonymous consultant explains via e-mail that "BP is not that dumb, and the public … are not as smart as they think they are."
