Jody Weis said that nearly half of the shootings appear to be gang-related, including the fatal incident. Weis added that at least two of the other victims have refused to cooperate with police, "which makes the job of our detectives ... far more difficult."One of the shootings was particularly disturbing because one of the female victims was 8 months pregnant, the superintendent said. No one in custody for any of the incidents. One of the shootings happened about 3 p.m. in the 6200 block of South Cottage Grove in the Woodlawn neighborhood. A 56-year-old man was standing on the corner when a passing car fired in his direction, said Police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak. He fell to the ground in pain and discovered he was shot in his calf, Kubiak said. He was taken to an area hospital and listed in good condition. About 8:10 p.m. in the 2900 block of North Milwaukee Avenue in the Logan Square neighborhood, a 47-year-old man was shot in his arm. Police said the shooting might have been a drive-by. The victim was taken to Norwegian-American Hospital and is now listed in good condition. In another shooting, which happened roughly 20 minutes earlier in the Ashburn neighborhood, a man, 19, was wounded in the leg in the 3900 block of West 79th Street outside Bogan Computer Technical High School. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and is now listed in critical condition. /snip

That seems like a high number. I wonder if the gangs were taking advantage of the numbers of police tied up by the President's visit, much like bank robbers did during the campaign.

A bit of Googling leads that number to seem less impressive by Chicago standards. And at least they are lousy shots, for the most part.

I'm thinking legs and arms would be far harder to hit due to their relatively small surface area compared to that of the chest.

But none of this is adequate reason for an outright ban. I could have a fully loaded mini-gun bolted to my car and you know what? No one would be injured still less killed. The trick to gun control, and crime generally, is to identify and deal with the criminal and nutjob elements effectively. Which does not imply draconian measures but rather to organise their lives within a changed socio-economic model that reduces their numbers and the frequency of incidents to as near zero as possible. But that (of course) would be "socialism". But what a laugh eh? Making it possible for lawful ownership of weapons through a liberal ideology. E
