realcoolhand -> Do I kill discussions? (5/30/2010 8:58:30 PM)

I've been posting seriously for a couple of weeks now, and it seems that threads die when I become deeply involved in the discussion, so I have an open question for you all: Do I kill discussions? Not my intent, really truly, but it seems to be the case, and I'm curious as to why.

Rule -> RE: Do I kill discussions? (5/30/2010 9:03:48 PM)

I do not know. I do recall, though, that Termyn8or once asked the same question, not more than a couple of months ago if I recall correctly.

realcoolhand -> RE: Do I kill discussions? (5/30/2010 9:05:19 PM)

Termyn8or? Seriously? Hell of a name.

Rule -> RE: Do I kill discussions? (5/30/2010 9:10:41 PM)

Umm, when did you start to frequent the forums? A couple of weeks ago and you have never read one of T's posts? I predict you will and rather earlier than later.

realcoolhand -> RE: Do I kill discussions? (5/30/2010 9:11:36 PM)

Nah, I never get tired of schooling folks like you.

TheHeretic -> RE: Do I kill discussions? (5/30/2010 9:15:57 PM)

I've seen one go down right after your arrival. It was over anyway. Maybe you just have shitty timing?

realcoolhand -> RE: Do I kill discussions? (5/30/2010 9:16:43 PM)

Ah, I thought you said "END rather earlier than later." My mistake. Sorry bout the smart-assed retort, Rule.

I've always had shitty timing, but I'm looking to cure that.

Let me guess. The profile pic is to motivate you?

You lost me, friend.

FR

I have read a few of your last posts.  Not just the religion thread by the way.  I like them.  I don't agree with all of them but I like the way you post.  Geeky and cited.  But that's just Me.  I like geeky and cited.  No telling what the masses might think.

Rule -> RE: Do I kill discussions? (5/30/2010 9:43:16 PM)

I should have inserted a comma.

well I can think of a few threads like the circumcision thread that you can kill among a few others that have no relevance to politics or religion.

DarlingSavage -> RE: Do I kill discussions? (5/30/2010 10:00:30 PM)

It's true, you kill threads.  Every time I go to post somewhere, I see that you've posted and I know it's all over.  You should probably not post on here.  No one really wants to talk to you, that's why all the threads end after you post.

Or (more likely) earlier, and later, and even later yet. Depending upon how verbose Mr. Term happens to be that particular evening!

Thank you sweety! I'll bear that in mind next time I post.

you can rest assured you are welcome to post in my threads anytime if you have something to add to the discussion.

unlike those whose purpose is to control the subject matter of the board to strictly popular and pleasant glass house arenas (to them), I walk in the truth and no subject is above my critical scrutiny. Darkness cannot deal with all that light shining through exposing their nakid asses to the world.

So not to worry you wont kill any of my threads unless you have brighter light and are ridiculously well researched.

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Do I kill discussions? (5/30/2010 10:54:51 PM)

Seriously, though, because it was a sincere question and deserves a sincere answer... I don't know. I don't post or lurk often enough anymore to have gotten a feel for you yet, so I have no idea what sort of effect you may be having on threads.

But one possibility is that because you're new, you'll draw fewer responses than someone who's better known. A lot of the replies are as much to the poster as to the post - people who know each other  have history, and a deeper grasp of where the other is coming from, so they see more layers in each others' communications than they might perceive in the communications of a stranger. You might say, "Obama needs to deal with the illegal immigration problem," and people will read it and say, "Hm. Guess he thinks Obama needs to deal with the illegal immigration problem. OK." And move on.

Whereas Heretic will say, "Obama needs to deal with the illegal immigration problem," and half a dozen people will have something to say to that post, because when he says it it has more context. Someone might say, "Well, you didn't think it was a federal issue when Bush was in office," or "I know this is a pet peeve of yours, but this is the first time I've ever seen you suggest it has something to do with 'don't ask, don't tell'," or "I've agreed with you in the past about immigration issues, and I'd be curious to know how you think it ties in with this thread on unemployment, ya dummy." Or, people will make a quip as part of a running inside joke between Heretic and them, or whatever. And the discussion just keeps on a'rollin'.

I wouldn't worry about it. I've been posting here since approximately 1933, and I often notice that I seem to kill a lot of threads too. I'm probably not a very popular poster, so people don't go very far out of their way to engage me. It is what it is.  I don't give it a lot of thought; I just say what pops into my head and move on. But you seem like a much nicer guy than I am, so if you stick around long enough I'm sure you'll get swept along into the mainstream and start inspiring more replies. Until then, fuck 'em! Their loss, damn it!

One of my self-appointed Sisyphean tasks is to teach Term the meaning of the word "pithy".
