Electronic Voice Phenomena. The ghost hunters run a tape recording, sometimes in deserted rooms, sometimes carry it around and address the spirits. Usually the hunters don't hear anything at the time but sometimes later they find they've captured something on tape that they say may be the voices of spirits.

So this is different than the "White Noise" type of recordings? I have read some stuff about that and it is interesting.

You are cracking me up on 'I wish', btw.

Um, as for the white noise vs this, I'm not sure. Do a google search and I'm sure you'll get a lot more info than I can give you, G. I'm just interested, I'm not a ghost hunter myself. :)

The Make a Wish thread is one of the best threads I have participated in. It is very funny.

I will have to Google EVP and find out. Thanks.

Eep, sorry for assuming everyone knows what I'm talking about, heh.  Thanks, AngelaK, for explaining for me....

But yeah, it's a lot of fun, but sometimes overwhelming, when you encounter a restless "spirit" or get this erie feeling that whatever is around died a violent death or whatever....

Are there websites that have examples of these types of recordings to listen to?

Gauge,
Check out "Ghosthunters" on SciFi channel on Wednesday nights.  They use the EVP equipment, along with thermal photography, EMF (Electromagnetic Field) recorders, air temperature scans, etc.  It's kind of a hokey show at times, but you'll get to see them put all the equipment to use in real 'ghost-hunting' sessions, and while they do attempt to "debunk" (be able to make phenomena happen on cue or find the actual cause for a noise thought to have been made by a ghost, such as a sump pump turning on and off) hauntings, they have found and documented some really cool things.

Make sure you leave the lights on

Well this really isn't a ghost story but I would like to share it anyway. 2003 a good friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer. He was at a hospital out of town receiving chemo and radiation. The treatment caused my friend to have a severe stroke. I’ll never forget how scared I was when I found out. They didn’t think he was going to make it another 4 hrs. The stroke was bad if he did make it they didn’t know if he would be himself. I have never went through something like this before. Someone I cared about so much was in a coma. He made it the 4 hrs but now all we could do was wait. Stress consumed me everyday and I visited him in the ICU. My friend awoke but showed no sign of speech and his comprehension was bad. I was beside myself. One night I had a dream that my friend called me from the hospital, he told me everything was going to be fine, he was going to be alright. He was going to make it. I woke up the next day with this feeling of relief and I knew that everything was going to be ok. I wrote about this dream in my Journal and when I talk to my friend about it today he say’s I’m crazy. That’s right he speaks, and although he shows signs of Broca’s aphasia all is good with the world.

Yeah, it's entertaining.....not blockbuster television, but intriguing much of the time.  It's a good place to see all the equipment they use put to use in a "reality" setting.

when this girl moved here, in her first apartment, a ghost kitty adopted her.
he is a BIG black cat.
at first she thought she was only seeing things, until a friend freaked because the "ghost kitty" jumped into the livingroom window, (this girl lived on the 3rd floor with a straight drop from the window the "cat" jumped in, to the street below).
she also witnessed him catching a mouse. the mouse was running across the floor when it was covered by a shadow and passed out. this girl picked it up and put it outside where it laid for a few moments before regaining conscienceness and running away.
now she only sees it when major changes are about to occur.

there are a couple of ghost cats at my folks house, my brother in law and i have seen them on many occasions - often when going to the bathroom at night i would see a cat, feel it brush against my calf, and think 'i'd better not kick/stand on the cat' only to turn back and see that the hall was empty. i think animal spirits are pretty common - Master says He sometimes sees our first bunny who died a few years ago, and when i was a child i saw a ghost dog or maybe a wolf at the foot of my parents bed. my little sis saw our childhood pet cat after he died - she was the one to find him dead and later that day she was sitting on the bed and saw him reflected in the mirror all curled up on the bed where he used to sleep. Another cat i grew up with died recently and my sis and brother in law saw a pen move a couple of feet across the table where they were doing artwork, he said 'stop it M (the cat's name), you're scaring L (my sis), and it stopped' - he knew who was doing it as that cat loved to play with pens.

p.s. sorry if my posting about this stuff is boring anyone, i just finished reading Fortean Times online <lol>

I have had several unexplained things happen when I was younger. But the most personal one was,  when my uncle was dieing (he was my favorite uncle) I kept praying that he would some how pull through and still be around. Well, one night I woke up with him sitting on the end of my bed.  I asked what he was doing there.  He said that I had to let him go. That the person laying in the hospital several hundred miles away wasn't him anymore. That he was fine now. That it was his time to go and not to worry about him, that he would always be with me. I said ok and that I loved him. He disappeared and I went back to sleep. My parents were woken later by the phone.  It was my aunt saying that my uncle had died during the night.  I believe that he died after his visit to me.  But, it was a comforting feeling knowing that he came to say goodbye to me. I was a young teenager at the time. It is one experience of many that I will never forget.

I used to work at a Kids R Us store... I was always the first one in in the morning. Our back warehouse had two levels, with a metal floor inbetween. One morning, while I was out back in the warehouse (I was the only one there) I clearly heard footsteps RUNNING overhead.

I waited outside the store until the assistant manager got there.

It seems to be going around, we've had visitations from our late cat for quite a while ... and lately there's been something 'other' as well that we're still trying to deal with. And i used to be the arch-rationalist ... sigh.
