Top Canadian Commander Sacked in Sex Scandal

(May 31) -- Canada's top commander in Afghanistan, who was supposed to lead NATO's Kandahar offensive this summer, has been fired for allegedly having an affair with a female soldier on his staff.

Brig. Gen. Daniel Menard, who is married with two children, was Canada's top soldier with a decorated 26-year career. He was based in southern Afghanistan and was due to lead what's expected to be one of the largest battles so far of the nine-year Afghan war. NATO's push to oust Taliban fighters from their spiritual stronghold in Kandahar is expected to start within weeks.

But Menard, 42, was relieved of his command over the weekend after Canada's military brass became aware of allegations that he was having an affair with a female subordinate on his command staff.

You don't get it ...It's a chain of command thing.

If you allow any of it, it opens the door for harassment by a superior officer.


So you allow none of it. It makes perfect sense if you actually have a brain.

Pics of the female might go along way in proving his innocence.

Status: offline 		I think there is a rule against military personnel fratranising with people in ranks below them.

Keeps the military free of allergations of favortism, sexism and all sorts of other 'isms.
Seems like a good idea to me - sort of along the lines of the boss not dating in his office - keeps life simplier.

and he was caught, and he knew the penalty. Hope it was worth it.

Status: offline 		For starters it's distracting. Generals in a combat zone work in a frenzy. Favoritism and romance reduces efficiency which is deadly for the soldiers. In lower ranks (company, platoon) this is also looked down upon to have relationships with people you command because a combat leader must focus on the objective, not the preservation of the life of a member of his command. It is against human nature to send someone you love to his or her death. Therefore, no romance on the battlefield.

Status: offline 		If an officer serving under this general was having an affair with a subordinate, Mr. Menard would be required to discipline him. He is no different.
