Do five miles every day.

I think you're right on this, thanks for the suggestion. It does help when i ride more frequently. I'll give it 5 miles a day and hopefully in the next 2 weeks till our first ride I'll get some kind of leather butt going on.

And I was in Delhi. Why were you in CR with your sore...parts?

Hawkeye Downs, motocross races.

We are very sorry.

Talk of a soar ass, requires documentation rather then this wild hearsay that you both are known for.

Buy a bigger bike seat. I have a nice oversized cushy gel seat (.I'd put a tractor seat on mine if they came that large!).

Ah. Hot and loud, then. Kinda like sexytime with tee--

nevermind...

Cycle more. You will get used to it. Every time cycling season starts, I get a sore butt for a week or so but then it goes away.

I hate cyclists. I really, really hate them.

If any of your problem is chaffing - vaseline between the butt cheeks!

This hasn't been a problem kiwi but I'll keep it in mind for the future. I mean who knows, it could come up at some point.

Frequent stops and stretching will help. I finally gave up and just had a nice simple funeral for my butt. :)

Yes, this helps and I do ask to stop here and there. I just wanted to cut down on that if I could lol. I'm not at my partner's level, he does more riding and apparently has no butt problems the way I do. I hate constantly being the one lagging behind .

I had a similar problem with my current bike.

The seat you have is most likely designed for the male butt, so it's narrow and shaped all wrong for us laydees. I splashed out on a wider seat, so that most of the weight of my body is NOT concentrated on the little girly bits and (to be somewhat coarse) the butthole, but spread out over a larger area, particularly the better-padded 'cheek' area. My seat is also gel-filled and has stronger springs for better shock absorption.

I also replaced the front fork of my bike for a fork with shock absorbers. It cost a bit, but sitting down is no longer a problem after even the longest bike ride! [:)]

And Jeffff....you got a one-track mind! Pervert [:D]

I was wondering if a different seat might help and what type to get. I used to use his mountain bike for our rides till I got my own bike around Oct. The mountain bike had a bit of a wider seat and it had front shocks. After switching over to riding my hybrid bike with no shocks in the front I was amazed at how different the ride was. I think I'll just put out the money for the seat and the new fork as you suggested...good idea.

Ebay has seats- even to browse might help.

Good idea on ebay for the components, thanks!

My lead pressman is an avid bicyclist. He does RAGBRAI every year in July. By the time it starts, he and his wife have over 1,000 miles of training in a few months time. They tend to ride 20-30 miles each night and 100ish each weekend.

I asked what to do for a sore butt. He said to make sure your bike fits you properly and keep riding.

Thank you for asking your employee about my problem, I appreciate it. He is a much more serious biker than I am...wow. Well, this gives me hope though....if he and his wife do that much biking it must be enjoyable for them. I'll hang in there as suggested and hope it gets better.

Have you considered cycling underwear ? Underwear that can be worn under your normal wear, it comes with padding in the vulnerable places to prevent or at least lessen the seat to body contact interface. There are normal padded variants available and even ones with gel inserts, which a long distance cyclist I know says is like sitting on a silicone breast implant, how he came to that similarity I will never know, but a man who shaves his legs and wears lycra that does not leave too much to the imagination I just have to wonder at.

Or you could just forego the padded underwear and wear proper cycling shorts, or even both if you like. But as to cycling, cycling technology has moved on a bit now, for seats are available for both male and female personages, each having various cut outs and extra padded areas for each anatomy.

As to the old saddle sores, just ointment and let the area heal/toughen up.

Never take the mule ride up to Yosemite Falls if you've not sat a horse in 20 years.  Even in jeans.

I found reasons to stay in the motel room the next day, sitting on the comfy chair!

BTW, the short frequent rides will help.  I always got the sore ass at the start of the school year, but after a week or so it toughened up.

Tee my darling.........I will stick to my 4 legged modes of transportation when not driving or riding a motorized bike. I have gotten a very sore butt from riding and yet no one has offered that massage.

Rule #1..........Do not ride a horse all day, while drinking, in shorts. Ohhhhhhhhhhhh the chaffing! Was the saddest looking pussy I have ever seen.

Woo. I would suggest a different seat or some foam to cushion. I have bicycled many miles over these past few months. My ass is skinny and bony and does not make for a good ride. So I stand.

(and no I am not dead just really busy surviving)

A few months ago I bicycled 140 miles in five days. I became somewhat toned. (I had thirty pounds worth of things).

Good Luck and happy riding.

This is true, last year it got better as the season went on but it never got comfortable. It always bothered me as an ongoing thing. I was just thinking that maybe there was something I was missing or not doing correctly and I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. I remembered from past threads that there were quite a few bicyclers here.

Awww, come on. How can you hate a group of people that wear skin tight shorts and have lovely muscular legs? So much to admire there while you wait for them to cross the road  [;)]

KatyLied -> RE: Abuse by bicycle...any solutions for a (very) sore butt? (6/1/2010 6:36:27 PM)

Make sure your bike is adjusted properly.  Your behind should be less sore if your bike is adjusted properly for height/leg length.  It is very important.  Also seats can lower over time, so you should always check this adjustment, just like you check the air in the tires.

DarlingSavage -> RE: Abuse by bicycle...any solutions for a (very) sore butt? (6/1/2010 6:50:16 PM)

Put 100 tacks on a seat pointing up, then slam your ass down on them really hard.  This is a guaranteed cure for SBS (Sore Butt Syndrome).

I admit I have never heard of cycling underwear. I'm thinking this must be like bicycling shorts which have padding in them through the middle. I do have the shorts and wear a pair of them when biking. I didn't get the cheaper ones either! I will however go to my local bike shop and ask about underwear...although it might be overkill to wear them with the padded shorts, I wonder if I could even walk with that much padding between my legs lol.

Thanks for the advice Pyro and good to hear from you. 140 miles? Yikes. My partner loves to do the longer rides and does at least one century every summer...I'm not up to that level yet. I'll stick with the 30 - 40 mile rides for now, especially till my hamstring injury heals completely.

I am definitely going to check into the getting a different seat thing, I do have a separate foam padding cover over the seat I have now and that helps a tiny bit.

Gosh, good idea, I was out riding earlier and wondered if the seat seemed a bit lower...probably it was. Thanks for the heads up...

No problem.  I have a nice Trek, but I always have to check the seat, they tend to slip down over time.  Enjoy your bike.  I love riding on rails-to-trails, it is nice, pretty, relaxing.  If your bike is adjusted properly it will be less strenuous on your body parts.

We have a great rails to trails here that was just finished last year where I live in MD, I looooove riding on it. It's the most relaxing ride anywhere and you see all kinds of wildlife. The formal bike rides my guy and I do a bit more intense since they're usually in the city (traffic) and my partner is more concerned with times and competitive junk than I am.
