I had the same problem. I suggest you buy bits if you're trying to achieve a hole of a certain size. Chances are, you will end up needing it more than once. I don't recommend trying to drill a hole then, if it's too small trying to drill around it to make it bigger with the same bit. You will probably end up fucking up your wood. Bits don't cost that much and they're good to have. I don't know what kind of drill you have, but most drills will let you put in more than one bit. The collet can be opened up by twisting the shaft and closed twisting it the other way. I don't know how familiar you are with your tool, but it's always good to know your tools. What kind of drill do you have? I just have a cheap Black & Decker, but it's good for what work I do with it. I got TONS of bits!
