How on earth did a thread about Canadian artic oil regulations become about the friggin' NWO...oh yeah Hunky noticed the thread....[:(]

pahunkboy -> RE: In socialist Canada..... (6/2/2010 7:31:37 PM)

Canada is impotent.  Just like Japan is.

Look how the PM stepped down- all over a US base there.   And the Artic does not belong to Canada.

It belongs to Goldman Sachs. -et all

Yes.

Our banking system survived your meltdown because our socialist Supreme Court prevented them from amalgamating and borrowing under prime.
WE rule.

Oh, and we burnt your first White House down. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7jlFZhprU4
We can do it again with our subsidised university educations, socialist healthcare system and maple syrup mines.

We are all your news anchors and actors because we can pronounce the differences between pan, pen, pin, pon and pun. All our men look like Cory Monteith/Finn from 'Glee' and all our women like Jolene Blalock/T'pol from 'Starship: Enterprise'. you cannot escape.

Now if you yankees could just find the dungeon where Stephen Harper keeps his male sex slaves and topple his fascist government, we'd call it even for our rescuing your hostages from Iran. Wellll, if you bring the Phoenix Coyotes back to Winnipeg, too and do 'something' about Gary Bettman.

Thanks a lot, buddy, eh?

I thought it all belonged to the Queen....make up your mind! It gets hard to keep track of your bugaboo-du-jour.

I wouldn't be so smug.   The Canadian dollar is backed by the US dollar.

Look around.   US is everywhere.   All at once too.

Now the US is a socialist country. We have socialism for the rich and capitalism for the poor.

This sums it up pretty nicely.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: In socialist Canada..... (6/4/2010 4:45:45 AM)

a friend and i were talking yesterday, and i said yanno, theres an emergency shut off valve to my kitchen sink, the gas that heats my water and that i cook with, there are emergency shut offs at gas stations, in fact there are emergency shut offs for just about everything i can think of that could be harmful.

wtf are there no emergency shut off valves for oil wells.  i am sure it would cost extra, and take extra time, but after this mess that we may not recover from in my lifetime, i hope someone wiser and with more power than me will come up with a plan and enforce it.

every time i see or hear more about this mess, i get a little madder.

sighs

Canadians, the smart ones anyway, want no part of being in the US. Without having been invaded, they have no incentive to surrender. They would have to work more hours to make less money to go without health care...

...and oh, die younger.

InvadeCanada.US

According to a World Health Organization report, life expectancy at birth in Canada is 79.8 years versus 77.3 in the US.

The bad news is, they have to spend the extra 2 1/2 years living in Canada.

There would have been.  But it was cut out to save money.

BTW- my old house does not have too many shut off valves. One by one- I get them put in tho.

pahunkboy -> RE: In socialist Canada..... (6/4/2010 5:39:23 AM)

Canada tho-- is probably my favorite country outside of the US.

At times I razz and slam anything in the line of sight.      To include the US.

That's what a blowout preventer is.  It didn't work.

Dr. Philip Neches: Gulf Oil Spill: Meet the Blow Out Preventer

JstAnotherSub -> RE: In socialist Canada..... (6/4/2010 6:38:10 AM)

from your link
quote:

And that appears to be the story. BP, Transocean, and Halliburton avoided standard tests and inspections on the blow out preventer stack. The stack apparently does not have a top-kill mechanism, forcing the crews to improvise on the battered BOP stack on the sea floor. We also learned that three days before the disaster, the crews took an economic short cut by pumping free seawater instead of expensive, man-made drilling mud into the well to try to close it. The crews apparently knew, or should have known, that the seawater was not countering the pressure in the well. The crew knew for at least an hour before the explosion that the blow out preventer was failing. This much we know, even before the formal investigation ordered by the White House gets going.
Blow out preventers are not new technology. But like any technology, they are only as safe and effective as the people and procedures that use them. Even if the formal investigation finds flaws in the equipment, the failure to follow known, established procedure is clearly a major factor in the disaster, and is the likely root cause of it.
We can tolerate failure in many technologies we use daily. When our PC crashes, we curse and reboot.
But some failures cause too much havoc to tolerate, so we focus on prevention. Just as our technology is not adequate for dealing with an off-shore oil spill after it happens, there is little we can do to save the passengers after an airplane crashes. Thus, for decades, the aviation industry and government regulators cooperated on prevention.
It looks like what happened in the Gulf is like an airliner taking off a list of outstanding maintenance reports, plus ice on the wings, and letting it fly into a thunderstorm. In aviation, that nightmare scenario just would not happen. Pilots, mechanics, and controllers would be fired first for neglecting the rules.
An off-shore oil well can affect the lives and livelihood of far more people than the passengers on an airliner. Shouldn't the people responsible for the well be held to at least the same standard as the people responsible for the airliner?
This failure occurred not because off-shore oil drilling is morally bad, but because it is inherently risky, and people who should know better took short cuts. The investigation may indeed show that enforcement of existing rules would have been sufficient to avert the disaster. After all, that seemed to work for over 3,800 other wells drilled in the last 30 years in the Gulf of Mexico.
i see failure all right, but not from the blowout preventer.  time will tell, unless they are good at coverups....

like i said, the more i hear, the madder i get.

Should we in the US require all offshore drilling to include relief wells?

Of course we should and it is inexcusable that there is not already a requirement for that.

But even Obama bought into the oil industry's propaganda when he told us how safe offshore drilling was a few months ago.

They work pretty well as long as,
                 1)  You don't ram a piece of drill pipe thru the closed stack, destroy the seals and then ignore the broken seals
                       coming up in the mud.
                 2)  All the communication systems are in place, functioning, and the batteries are not dead.
                 3)  You don't set it in place on the sea floor with a test part rather than the actual working part.
                 4)  Your not standing around on the deck arguing about who has to OK throwing the switch.

Minimal regulatory requirements would safeguard against potential disasters.
