Mark Kirk has made a series of misrepresentations of his military service.

He claimed he one the USN's "Intelligence Officer of the Year" then it was the squadron he commanded won the USN's "Intelligence Unit of the Year" in reality the wing his squadron was part of received an award bestowed by a non Navy professional organization.

He claimed to have been shot at while in a recon flight over Iraq. No record of such an incident exists and he has retracted the claim.

He claimed in campaign materials to have been a veteran of Desert Storm. During the conflict he was stationed stateside and was never in the theatre.

Is it now time for him to step aside so his party can field a candidate worthy of holding a position of trust? Note that this is a serious question because the Democratic candidate in this race is no prize and an alternative who isn't a lying piece of crap would get my vote.

What I find most offensive is these jagoffs---from both parties-- think they can get away with it. But then they're schtupping like no one will ever know that either.

We may be far too draconian in our expectations of moral leadership from those in the public eye. However, when they spout and sputter about their greatness and they lie, it's offensive to the collective intellect, it seems to me. Also to Google.

This type of lie is dispicable and it happens often on both sides of the aisle. Even Hillary told a whopper when she said her plane came under anti aircraft fire on a trip to Bosnia. There are many politicians who have lied about medals earned, service that never happened and other embellished stories to make them look and sound important. The real heros don't talk about it.

Its only misrepresentation if you know it to be a false statement or dont know or care if its true or false yet still make it in an effort to induce someone to do something - in this case vote for you.

This is the secret of the great modern politician - to honestly believe your lies, and to have ready prepared any old "reasonable" grounds that might account for that belief to present in explanation should you be found out or that might be used to put it down to a misstatement or misunderstanding.

Mark Kirk, whoever he might be, is obviously not cut out for modern politics, having devised misrepresentations that are not so easily explained. Having failed this basic test, he is clearly not suitable to misrepresent government to the electorate nor to misrepresent the electorate to government.

I think people need to start voting for their party candidates, especially the Green party. Why don't you give somebody else a chance?

Well, he's probably a dirtbag, telling lies, just like that candidate who likes to mention the greeting when "we" got back from Vietnam, but was a stateside Marine reservist.

Just in the interest of fairness though, depending on the kind of intel he did, the orders that went into the files might not reflect the accuracy of his location. But then, he went running his mouth about classified material, so there doesn't seem to be an easy out for him.

Explaining away his statments as violations of the National Security Act rather than lies would if anything make me less likely to vote for him. But he has so far not made any such claim.

I wasn't suggesting he had, Ken, merely mentioning a closed path as he tries to worm his way through somehow.

Which suggests a better point than itself. If he'd said what branch he served in but then made it clear that he wouldnt talk any further about it, it would have left people to make their own minds up as to why, and likely conclude him the hero he aspired through his lies to be.
