Don't put any type of oil on it, it holds the heat in.  If there are 3rd degree burns, he needs to go to the emergency room.

With 3rd degree burns, he need to listen to the doctors advice for care exclusively.

WinsomeDefiance -> RE: 2nd and 3rd degree burns Tuesday! (6/4/2010 3:43:12 PM)

How was he burned, how badly and on how much of his body?

Take it from a redheaded Irish woman, for sunburns, Noxema Skin Cream
will cool the heat of a sunburn.

If he has 3rd degree burns he should
already be under the care of a physisician who should have told him how
to care for it, usually with some sylvadine (sp?) cream.

Vitamin E preventing scarring is an old wives tale.

From what a doctor disciple has told me, the vitamin E could actually cause the afflicted area to heal back darker than the skin around it.

So sayeth the Raptor.

Back to the beginning of post #4

We have next to no information.

Your brother may not know what a 3rd degree burn is.
People sometimes don't.

How big are the burns/is the burned area?

Are you wondering what he should do or just sharing that you are feeling anxious, PA?

Water, now... 3 days later isn't going to fix it.
If it is a third degree burn, he needs medical attention. 2nd and especially 3rd degree burns get infected very easily and home remedies don't prevent them with that sort of burn.

Thanks all.  Something does not sound right.   I must have mis-understood his email.

Seems extreme.

Winsome,

Another good thing for that sunburn is apple cider vinegar. It works really well (although it doesn't smell great, lol). Also, Bath and Body Works, Cucumber Melon lotion will help to relieve the pain. I used to use that on my son all the time who has his father's Irish Skin.

I forgot all about that!  Your post brought back memories of a lobster red me, sitting naked in a bathtub pouring cups of vinegar over my poor burned skin.  Yes, it really does work.  Vinegar is great for lots of stuff.

Speaking of baths, I think putting chamomile tea in the bath when you are sunburned will help also. But I admit that is a foggy type of memory that I "think" I read somewhere, so I'm not 100% sure.

Being Italian, I rarely have to deal with sunburn, but there were a couple of times I got it bad, so I can really sympathize with how horrible it must be for you palefaces!

PA, here is a great site describing all the burns and what to do.

Thinking- on it- it makes no sense.  He is out of town on vacation.  2nd 3rd degree burns do not let you function a few days later.   Not for an 8 hour drive...

I will ask mom today what the deal is.

DarlingSavage -> RE: 2nd and 3rd degree burns Tuesday! (6/5/2010 5:12:47 AM)

I had 3rd degree burns on my legs once.  I was boiling water in an old cast iron tea kettle and when I went to take the kettle off the stove, the bottom fell out and the water spilled down the front of my legs.  We were poor so we didn't go to the hospital right away.  But we had to go after a couple days cause I couldn't take the pain anymore.  They gave me a pain killer and numbed my legs out then scrubbed them with a brush.  Then they gave me silvadine to put on them.  I had to wear bandages on my legs that had to be changed every day.  When they started healing, they would get very itchy, so I would take the shower massager and run hot water over them.  That was a tremendous help and I think it seriously curbed the scarring.  The scars are very hard to discern now, but I'm very careful with boiling water in pots now.

This woman that lived in our apt. complex said she was a nurse and told us to spray windex on my legs.  She was lying.  But at 22, we were very naive.  I do not understand some people.  Why would anyone tell someone a thing like that?  My husband would spray Windex on my legs and I would just cry cause it hurt so bad.  Finally, one night, I was in so much pain, I couldn't sleep, and I had to tell my husband to take me to the hospital.  I'm so glad I did and that he took me.

pahunkboy -> RE: 2nd and 3rd degree burns Tuesday! (6/5/2010 6:59:51 AM)

DS, windex?  That is TERRIBLE.

tazzygirl -> RE: 2nd and 3rd degree burns Tuesday! (6/5/2010 7:30:43 AM)

I wonder if the nurse was greek. hmmm.

kiwisub12 -> RE: 2nd and 3rd degree burns Tuesday! (6/5/2010 10:30:25 AM)

second degree burns would hurt so badly that i really don't think anyone could stand it without seeking medical care. First degree - yep, theyd hurt, but maybe not to the point he would need medical attention.

First degree - think bad sunburn, doesn't typically scar.

Second degree - partial thickness destruction of skin, hurts all the time, scars.

Third degree - full thickness skin destruction, including nerves so there is no pain.

And there can be degrees of all in a single burn. just remember , if it doesn't hurt, seek immediate attention. .... no windex, no butter, no oil - clean wet cloths until you can see a doctor.

DarlingSavage -> RE: 2nd and 3rd degree burns Tuesday! (6/7/2010 9:11:29 AM)

I don't think she was really a nurse. More than that, she said that she used to work in a burn unit and that was what they did. I didn't think that anyone would lie about such a thing. I still don't understand that.

kiwisub12 -> RE: 2nd and 3rd degree burns Tuesday! (6/7/2010 12:10:55 PM)

maybe she was like a nurses aid and saw them spraying something with what looked like windex bottles, so jumped to a conclusion.  A wrong conclusion.

pahunkboy -> RE: 2nd and 3rd degree burns Tuesday! (6/7/2010 1:28:55 PM)

Ok- mom said while my bro was out of state at his wifes peoples house.   A pot of grease on the stove caught on fire- he grabbed it to put the fire out.  and got burnt.
