A friend sent me this:

Toxics off our strawberries

No methyl iodide.

Methyl iodide is a known carcinogen, thyroid disruptor, and neurotoxin, and presents clear dangers to farm workers and surrounding populations when used for broadcast agricultural applications. We urge you to immediately re-evaluate the EPA's decision to register methyl iodide as a soil fumigant.

You may have heard that California, the nation's largest agricultural producer, is on the verge of approving a potent carcinogenic gas for use on strawberry fields and other food crops. The chemical — methyl iodide — is so toxic that scientists in labs use only small amounts with special protective equipment, yet agricultural applications mean it could be released directly into the air and water.

CREDO members have been working hard to stop methyl iodide in California by submitting over 26,000 public comments in opposition to the state's approval of the pesticide. But there are steps we can take nationally as well. The ultimate power to regulate pesticides lies with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It originally issued its approval of methyl iodide under George W. Bush's administration but has the ability to revisit the decision at any time.

Methyl iodide has been subject to ongoing controversy in its approval process. The U.S. EPA approved methyl iodide for agricultural use in 2007, amid criticism from more than 50 prominent scientists that the process was hidden from public view and the research focus was too limited. Even though a report from an independent panel of scientists in California's review declared that "methyl iodide is a highly toxic chemical and we expect that any anticipated scenario for the agricultural or structural fumigation use of this agent would result in exposures to a large number of the public and thus would have a significant adverse impact on public health," the state nonetheless proposed that the chemical be approved.

There is little to debate about methyl iodide's toxicity. It is a known neurotoxin, disrupts thyroid function, damages developing fetuses, and has caused lung tumors in laboratory animals. California already classifies it as a human carcinogen. Fumigating fields with the gas — even with the strictest regulations — would no doubt still result in unacceptable exposures to farmworkers and surrounding populations.

While we hope California will do the right thing and not approve methyl iodide, the only surefire way to keep this poison away from workers and our food is to ban it at the federal level.

Click here to automatically sign the petition asking the EPA to reverse its previous decision and prohibit the agricultural use of methyl iodide.

Thank you for standing up for safe and healthy food.

No more strawberries unless you grow them yourself. Check.

Doesn't surprise me a bit, just another thing that will make leaving this life easier when the time comes. It's all in who has the most lobbying money, I've known it for decades, and other than thanking you for the heads up, I see no reason to comment further.

Just strawberries?

thornhappy -> RE: Toxics off our strawberries/No methyl iodide (6/5/2010 10:26:35 AM)

Maybe it's safer than ethylene bromide, which IIRC, they used to use.

Methyl iodide is used as a pesticide.  They're toxic by definition.  If you manage to succeed is halting methyl iodide's use, something else will be used in its stead.

Or, you could stop over to Tim's Strawberries.

I use no pesticides at all--the birds do the bug control here.

Yes and let that something be something that wont kill us. Seriously are you promoting the use?

He's pointing out that all pesticides are toxic to some extent.  It's literally a matter of "pick your poison".  However, some have the advantage of decaying with time.

I like the idea of using the birds, but that could be tough for very large farms with relatively few trees (Salinas Valley, for instance).

Tim, do you have to cover the strawberries or do the birds leave them alone?

Looks like they made the switch because methyl bromide depletes the ozone layer.  But it also looks like you have to have your ducks in a row to use the stuff safely - buffer zones, protective gear, etc.  It's used the same way methyl bromide was; you put the stuff down, then cover with plastic to sterilize the soil.

Nope. I'm urging caution about pushing for it to be replaced without knowing what the replacement will be.

You requested that a pesticide be used that is effective but nontoxic to humans.  I'm not an expert in chemicals but I'm not really aware of something like that.

Musicmystery -> RE: Toxics off our strawberries/No methyl iodide (6/5/2010 9:27:20 PM)

We need pesticides primarily because we clear large areas and through nature's balances out of whack. Grow in smaller patches surrounded by natural predators, and harvest promptly, and insects just aren't the problem we create.

Go to the Farmer's Markets. Every place, country and city, has them. Stuff is cheaper, fresher, and better produced.

From my understanding in the last thousand years or so, people knew that unhealthy plants were the most attacked by pests. So maybe the solution is to effectively fertilize the soil, rather than just bombarding it with NPK.

Suck it up kiddies. Profit is the motive, and the government is bought and paid for by the big guys.
