I saw these for the first time about a month ago when I went to visit my son at Fort Bragg. He is training for Special Ops there...he has a pair as do many of the other men he is training with. I had the opportunity to observe one of his workouts at the gym and I would say that about half the men there had 5 fingers on. I was pretty taken with them and insisted on having my own pair....we went to the store where he got his and I was able to try them on - the sizing is tricky as it is European - but they did not have the style I wanted so I opted to order them instead from the company's website. I never got around to ordering them but I still want to.

I found the company's site very informative. I've spoken to a few other people who have them and they have all loved them. I think they seem pretty amazing. The cool thing for me too is that I can wear them as kayaking shoes, I have a pair of water shoes for that activity but they're not quite cutting it and I need a better solution. I figure I could get regular kayaking shoes but they cost about as much as the 5 fingers and they'd only be usable for that one activity whereas I could wear the 5 fingers for a lot of other stuff too.

I bought these shoes for running few months back. I really like them. However, they weren't lying when they said your feet/legs might hurt even if you are used to running. These shoe don't provide support that we are used from our usual running shoes, and this causes you to work muscles that you didn't excises before (and that's why they initially might hurt after your first few running sessions).

Edit: Even if you want to buy them online and get a better deal, still visit a store and try them on first. Their sizing is not quite like like for other shoes - it is more precise; and majority of people have feet with slightly different sizes, which might matter for these shoes.

We do most of our Triathlon and cross country training in these.

For anyone serious in using these I'd suggest the following:

Asphalt and cement are not natural substances, begin on grass or treadmills or you will likely cause joint issues within the first 30-days.
Spend the first week just walking around throughout the day, DO NOT RUN. (You'll get strange looks at grocery stores. /g/)
For the first week, regardless of how far you used to run (we were used to 12-15 miles easy in a run), start in quarter mile segments no farther than one mile. IE. Quarter mile, rest, see how you feel.  Run another quarter mile, rest. etc.
Try your first longer distance run (4+ miles) in the 4-6 week mark.

Most important: do NOT run heel - toe.  It will not work and you will cause serious injury to your heel muscle.  Do NOT jog.  These are RUNNING shoes, not a fancy new Nike commercial to motivate the overweight to 'just do it'.

Do NOT push it.  This isn't a test of manhood and you can and will do serious injury if you're not careful.  Most people have spent their entire lives without the need for an arch muscle.

Happy free running!

well, what a surprise, never figured i'd be seeing a discussion on Vibram 5 fingers here!

anyway, my adult daughter has a pair. she normally is barefoot but when more is needed, she puts them on. She loves them as it still feels like being barefoot and they do look different with 5 toes on a “shoe.” i would say they are not only good for running but also walking if on a very rough surface or very dirty. Her Vibram 5 fingers are blue so interesting going into places with "blue" feet.

These shoes are a result of the barefoot running/walking movement and recent studies that show shoes are bad for Y/your feet and in most cases, barefeet is best b/c the dynamics of how one walks/runs changes for the worse with shoes. The feet evolved over a very long time w/o the "benefit" of shoes, most leg, knee and back injuries are due to wearing running/walking shoes and the more padding means more damage and more of an unnatural gait (look it up barefoot walking/running via Google) that do not allow the muscles of the feet cushion the foot/leg muscles and joints.

Most persons who usually wear shoes and as a result have soft soles and weat foot muscles will need time to adjust unless used to walking/running barefoot, but wearing these "shoes" get almost the same benefit (just not directly feeling the ground underneath).

great for when being barefoot is not possible,

slave john

I think one of the massage therapists at the place I go to has shoes like this.

I want a pair so badly. I really really HATE shoes and Master took one look at them and said they would be perfect for taking His girl out for walks when she didn`t want to wear shoes so her paws don`t get hurt from little rocks and stuff like they would if she went barefoot like she wants to.

I *really* want a pair of these but we don't have any around where I live and I have wide feet so unsure what size to get for them.

I have a pair of these and they are awesome! I'd love to get another pair. I wonder if they'll ever make ones for winter.
