Waterboarding pride Former President George W. Bush said Wednesday that he has no regrets about waterboarding Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, saying that, if presented with the same opportunity, he’d “do it again.” Bush made the comments in reference to Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the accused mastermind of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks who was waterboarded after his capture, during a speech to the Economics Club of Grand Rapids in Michigan. The remarks were first reported by the Grand Rapids Press. “Yeah, we waterboarded Khalid Sheikh Mohammed,” Bush said. “I'd do it again to save lives.” Karl Rove, the ex-president's former top political adviser, has frequently defended the use of waterboarding, telling the BBC in March that he is “proud” of the practice. Bush also defended his decision to invade Iraq during the speech, despite the fact that weapons of mass destruction were never found. “Getting rid of Saddam Hussein was the right thing to do, and the world is a better place without him,” the former president said.
