Brain -> BP Buys Oil Search Terms to Redirect Users to Official Company Website (6/6/2010 12:22:59 AM)

Just FYI,

FTA:

Scott Slatin, an analyst who runs search engine marketing company Rivington in New York, estimates the company is paying upwards of $10,000 per day to maintain the various search terms.

BP Spokesman Acknowledges Purchase 'To Make It Easier for People to Find Out More About Our Efforts in the Gulf' and Other Ways to Help

Be careful where you click, especially if you're looking for news on the BP oil spill.

BP, the very company responsible for the oil spill that is already the worst in U.S. history, has purchased several phrases on search engines such as Google and Yahoo so that the first result that shows up directs information seekers to the company's official website.

A simple Google search of "oil spill" turns up several thousand news results, but the first link, highlighted at the very top of the page, is from BP. "Learn more about how BP is helping," the link's tagline reads.

But several search engine marketing experts are questioning BP's intentions, suggesting that controlling what the public finds when they look online for oil spill information is just another way for the company to try and rebuild the company's suffering public image.

According to Kevin Ryan, the CEO of California-based Motivity Marketing, research shows that most people can't tell the difference between a paid result pages, like the ones BP have, and actual news pages.

"If you look at it from BP's perspective it's a brilliant move," Ryan said. "The other option BP had was to just not do this and let the news interpret what's going on.

Except for the fact that this indicates that everything is for sale, what should I say ?

Learn how BP is helping ? I thought it was their help that created this whole situation LOL. How this affects the sheeple I am not sure, but nothing affects me much. This is a PR thing and that's all. I know who and how these people are, and they want you to go to their gas stations and not to increase their lobbying costs. That is all.

Other than that they don't give a shit about the environment nor anyone except themselves. Apparently neither does Google. But then what did I expect right ?

For some people everything is for sale. If I had kids and someone offered me a trillion bucks apiece for them, can I honestly say with assurance that I would say no ? Or would I think "They certainly wouldn't treat something they paid that much for badly" ?

Each person draws a line. They might etch it in stone, use a pen, maybe a pencil, or maybe even chalk. Then for some it is no more than a stick drawn through the sand. Some are totally immune to the amount, some of those because of morals and others because they don't need money. Don't expect the morals issue to stand up well in this day and age.

Interesting.  If I Google "refrigerators", Google will send me to links to companies selling refrigerators.  They buy placement to sell more fridges.

If I Google oil spill, I will be sent to links where BP says what they're doing.  They're selling PR instead of merchandise, but the principle's the same.

But, but, but, when I googled oil spill, bp site came up first and like the guy said most people on the internet are too stupid to see the address bp.com and realize it's a bp site. They must also be to stupid to see the other links below it leading to other sites. Kinda makes me wonder how they found google to do the search in the first place.

So what? It's clearly in the Sponsored Links box at the top, no different from any other search.

Do what everyone else does---start with the links under the box: Associated Press, ABC News, Los Angeles Times....

No wonder Obama is "furious!"
B.P. (was) his biggest contributor. There'll be a lot less money in the pot for him now.
All the "little people" who were "sending in their checks for $10 and $15" (Awwwww, doesn't that make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside?) are going to have to pony up $50-$75 now so he can get re-elected and bailout more big corporations.
The very banks that are denying "the little people" loans were bailed out by Obama!
I can see it now, all the Irish wiseguys up in Boston will be going to school nights to get their "degrees."
"Don't FUCK with me! I'm a fuckin' COLLEGE PROFESSOR!" "You got a fuckin' problem with that Asshole?" "I'm a Book....Banker, I have two degrees in ECO-FUCKIN" -NOMICS!
"Fuckin' Cops, GET OUT OF HERE!" We're having a fuckin' Alumni Meeting, what's it to ya?"

So far in 2010, the oil and gas industries have contributed $12.8 million to all candidates, with 71% of that money going to Republicans. During the 2008 election cycle, 77% of the industry’s $35.6 million in contributions went to Republicans, and in the 2008 presidential contest, Republican candidate Sen. John McCain received more than twice as much money from the oil and gas industries as Obama: McCain collected $2.4 million; Obama, $898,000.

I can understand some hesitancy to accept that information without doubt.  I've worked for too many companies that had PACs where employees (mostly management) were expected to contribute but had little to no say where the money went.

According to Reuters, Barack Obama is the single largest recipient of BP's donations, having received  $77,051 during his time in the Senate and running for President. It also says that in 2000 Republicans received 39% more than Democrats but that by 2008 the Democratic Party had almost pulled even.

I don't think anyone's in a position to throw stones over BP political contributions.

Lucy, those figures could be correct and not change that BP was "Obama's" biggest contributor.
They could have given McCain "more" money than Obama.

flcouple2009 -> RE: BP Buys Oil Search Terms to Redirect Users to Official Company Website (6/6/2010 4:54:16 PM)

What is your point?  Are you trying to suggest that Obama let BP do whatever they wanted because of a few thousand dollars?
