popeye, at the same time, people need to pay attention to markets.

I was a music performance major. I didn't whine--I got busy and learned to put my skills to work. That led to a host of other opportunities, one after the other, building a unique and successful career.

Today, when I hear degreed people whine about the lack of opportunities, I have no sympathy.

1) You can't pursue a career as a sociology professor and wonder why you don't make $100,000.
2) You're supposed to be smart--go do something smart, and you'll earn a better living.

Says a lot about the values we have and the mixed-up priorities.

They are overeducated for the market. Too many have an MBA. Too many are out of work. Their education does not afford them the entitlement of a position anywhere and they have educated them out of the more menial positions.

Do you think they are "overeducated for the market" or that they had no realistic idea how to make money verses becoming educated? Or that the two are not synonymous?

A full professorship and $100K does not seem too far out of line. A junior high school teacher in orange county california makes about $65K with about ten years on the job.

In the "bubble" market, it was an air of entitlement that came with a high education. The market cant support that belief anymore. MBA's who once came out of school with companies willing to pay for their educational experience now want more for their money. They would have been better off having worked between degrees, or while achieving degrees.

In the "bubble" market,

I have no idea what a bubble market is.

it was an air of entitlement that came with a high education.

What moron wrote that down and where?

The market cant support that belief anymore.

What belief????The one that says if you learn something that is worth $100k per year it wont pay you $200K per year?
That does not seem too difficult to understand.

Or perhaps recognized that trade school is where one goes to learn how to make money and college is where you go to become educated and the two are not the same thing.

Fast Reply-

It is graduation time and lots of the local university students are moving back home because those high paying jobs are not waiting for them anymore. Even the ones with the accounting or engineering degrees.

What do you get from an MBA? One recent study found that MBAs acquire an enormous amount of self-confidence during their graduate education. They learn to believe that they are the best and the brightest. This narcissism has a real career impact.

Psychologists at Ohio State University studied the behaviour of 153 MBA students, who were put in groups of four and asked to orchestrate a large financial transaction on behalf of an imaginary company.

The psychologists observed that the students who had the strongest narcissistic traits were most likely to emerge as leaders.

According to Amy Brunell, the lead author, the results of the study had large implications for real world settings, because "narcissistic leaders tend to have volatile and risky decision-making performance and can be ineffective and potentially destructive leaders."

Guys like John Thain (Harvard Business School, 1979) exemplify this behaviour when their sense of entitlement is so grand that they can spend a fortune renovating an office while their firm is going down in flames.

I find it amusing that you are arguing a few points we both agree on. But there ya go.. lol

LadyEllen -> RE: You never know who's working at the drugstore. (6/8/2010 5:20:44 PM)

That is rubbish Tazzy; I am a class one narcissist and my decisions as a leader are very effective and productive. Also I am very pretty and a wonderful person all round, such that anyone who calls it into question must be an idiot, and I am entitled to the best of everything and on a priority basis at that.

It is hard to argue with such a hard hitting and succinct appraisal of your abilities... so I wont[8|]

Good thing for you Thompson - otherwise I should think you an idiot, obviously.

I'm glad that everyone's being so reasonable about this and coming to the right conclusion and judgment. Not unexpected of course given that the matter is so self evident, but it does save a lot of time and effort in convincing people of their error otherwise.

thornhappy -> RE: You never know who's working at the drugstore. (6/8/2010 6:48:06 PM)

A lot of what he doesn't know he should've learned in high school.

You can go to college and come out with a high paying career.  Not everyone's going there for film studies.

This particular young man had no clue what was in the constitution or even when world war II was or the line of presidential succession. Needless to say he had no clue as to who or why beethoven, brahms or bartok were noteworthy. Had not the least inclination to learn of des cartes or newton and their effect on his life.
So if making money is your goal become a plumber, electrician, mechanic a welder or any skilled trade.
If you wish to acquaint yourself with the knowledge of the past several billion years then perhaps college and not trade school should be your choice.
Those anti intellectual asshats on this board should consider this before stuffing both feet in their mouths.

~smiles evah so sweetly

Stopping while one is ahead, i heard, is a great sign of intelligence and maturity, Ma'am (cant believe i even typed that part)

LadyEllen -> RE: You never know who's working at the drugstore. (6/8/2010 6:54:46 PM)

There is of course no doubting the intelligence and maturity, not to mention general admirability, of anyone who sees things the way I do. Its simply stands to reason that my opinion is a manifestation of perfection in an imperfect world, such that allegiance to it must need reflect positively on those of such profession.
