U.S. Intelligence Analyst Arrested in Wikileaks Video Probe

   * By Kevin Poulsen and Kim Zetter
   * June 6, 2010

Federal officials have arrested an Army intelligence analyst who boasted of giving classified U.S. combat video and hundreds of thousands of classified State Department records to whistleblower site Wikileaks, Wired.com has learned.

SPC Bradley Manning, 22, of Potomac, Maryland, was stationed at Forward Operating Base Hammer, 40 miles east of Baghdad, where he was arrested nearly two weeks ago by the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division. A family member says he’s being held in custody in Kuwait, and has not been formally charged.

Manning was turned in late last month by a former computer hacker with whom he spoke online. In the course of their chats, Manning took credit for leaking a headline-making video of a helicopter attack that Wikileaks posted online in April. The video showed a deadly 2007 U.S. helicopter air strike in Baghdad that claimed the lives of several innocent civilians.

He said he also leaked three other items to Wikileaks: a separate video showing the notorious 2009 Garani air strike in Afghanistan that Wikileaks has previously acknowledged is in its possession; a classified Army document evaluating Wikileaks as a security threat, which the site posted in March; and a previously unreported breach consisting of 260,000 classified U.S. diplomatic cables that Manning described as exposing “almost criminal political back dealings.”

“Hillary Clinton, and several thousand diplomats around the world are going to have a heart attack when they wake up one morning, and find an entire repository of classified foreign policy is available, in searchable format, to the public,” Manning wrote.

Hillary Clinton involved in "almost criminal political back dealings"?!!

Say it ain't so!

As usual Firm has added 2+2 and made 5. The line about criminal dealing and the line about Mrs Clinton are not even in the same paragraph.

I would have thought the story alone was enough to warrant its own thread, without using it as a political attack on Clinton.

And maybe you are fixated.

I thought the Clinton stuff was funny.  Especially when you would expect it to have been about Bush, and that administration's dealings in the area, during and after the invasion.

I don't suspect that much of anything that Hillary might be accused of, would match the juiciness of some of that stuff.  And my comments were meant to bring that out.

And, actually, I think a lot of stuff that a young, inexperienced and naive analyst might thing of as "almost criminal political back dealings" would likely just be the same-ole, same-ole diplomatic BS that is thousands of years old.

There was a lot more stuff in the complete article that I thought was pretty interesting, and important as well, but didn't post, and didn't mention.

Fee free to bring them up.

After all, that was why I posted on it.

I'd thought the Right's loathing for Hilary C had died off a bit since somebody else got the Democrat nomination the other year. Evidently not, though.

So, I guess none of you guys have anything to say about the meat of the article?

Governments have been using the excuse of national security to cover up their questionable actions for years. Occasionally something of this nature comes to light and at least then you get someone that sees civilian deaths as routine deposed from a position. Sadly the government likes to portray the whistle blower as someone likely to bring down the government. If a government acts in all its dealings whiter than white then it can't be brought down by any individual and has nothing to hide or fear.

How is any of this material going to affect national security unless we are lumping in national reputation as being part of national security?

Well recall, from the bellicose right, Hillary Clinton in about no time during the campaign...became a traitor. Not a crazy dissident, some crazy bitch...but s traitor.

I saw no irony, just a dig at Clinton. Are you telling me my comment is incorrect, or do I need to highlight the two paragraphs for you.

You mention talking about the meat of the story, yet failed to do so yourself, that my friend, is what I call irony.

The younger one is, the less background checking the security agencies have to do. That said, somebody screwed up either in checking out the politics of this ( probably soon-to-be jailed for life) kid, or someone got to him and screwed up his loyalties.

Getting a scurity clearance is pass or fail. It's not exactly a graduated thing.

So, if I understand what you are saying, you chose to focus on the Clinton aspect even though you thought there were many other interesting things in the article, but you decided it would be best if if other people brought those interesting things up.

I read the complete article and commend Lamo for turining him in. If Manning had shown his superiors the lax security, he would have been a hero. The article seems to imply Manning, an isolated, not socially adept soldier was more interested in the splash it would cause.

I agree wrongdoing should be exposed, but it's not up to a 22 year-old to declassify intelligence on his own initiative.

What does his age have to do with it?

If there is corruption it should be exposed.

My guess is he didn't trust that his superiors would act on the information.

His age isn't as important as his lack of judgement. One does NOT decide that s/he knows better than the entire US security machine and say, "Hey, everybody should know about this"!

Wrongdoing should be exposed, but not in a manner that would endanger our national security or our troops.

Yeah.  It bothers me a lot that some 22 year old kid stole state secrets back in March, and was apprehended months later because he told someone.  If he had kept his mouth shut... Just how easy is it to hack that stuff anyway?

Hmmm. Either you don't need that hand, or you get a thrill from jerking off with the other one.

I saw this news earlier today. I hope they find a trustworthy gay soldier to replace him.

Fun aside, what the HELL is going on with operational security that this idiot (soon to be the new punk in Leavenworth) was able to cache and release this quantity of diplomatic traffic?

If these cables amount to anything, I sincerely hope that Wikileaks understands the kind of responsibility that rests on them. At least he didn't give the stuff to the New York Times.
