Brain -> Hawking: Religion will be defeated by science (6/8/2010 7:04:15 PM)

I don't like too much authority; too much of anything is no good; it's just like eating food, if I eat too much food I get fat.

FTA:
"There is a fundamental difference between religion, which is based on authority, (and) science, which is based on observation and reason. Science will win because it works."

Hawking: Religion will be defeated by science

In an interview with Diane Sawyer that airs Monday evening, Stephen Hawking declares that science and religion are irreconcilable, because only science 'works.'

Canada will be defeated by the French..

Hell, religion will be defeated by religion.

brainiacsub -> RE: Hawking: Religion will be defeated by science (6/8/2010 7:41:35 PM)

Of course it will. I and others tried to argue this exact point in the "Religion and Critical Thinking" thread a few weeks back. It'll be fun watching this one go to 30+ pages.

He is the prophet of Atheism, I do not like any sort of zealot and he is one

I don't see religion going away. Ever. It doesn't matter if we're cruising between the stars in big starships while charging our disintegrator pistols. New religions will form and old ones will die out or fade away - but there's always going to be religion.

Given that science has been advancing for centuries and religion is still chugging along - at what point doyou see science over-powering religion to the extent that religion in its entirety fades away?

[Edit: It's typo night here at the Copa.]

Sacred Geometry and Quantum Physics are the future.

See, now I have to clarify my answer because you made a good point. Do I think religion is the antithesis of science? Yes. But you are right, there will always be those who reject science for religion or morph their religious beliefs to complement scientific discovery.

It's hard to say at what point, it may take 1000 years but I know recently advancements in science are increasing exponentially so, it may be sooner than we all think; at least I hope so.

A strange prophet indeed, since he even becomes angry when called an atheist. He is an agnostic deist, not an atheist, so you'll have to find a new zealot to dislike.

I think she was confusing him with Richard Dawkins.

Yeah...they are so much alike. ;)

Fellow -> RE: Hawking: Religion will be defeated by science (6/8/2010 10:57:37 PM)

The atheists believe it has already happened. What is science? More scientists are religious than not. The opinion surprises me. I guess S. Hawkins has not thought  much about religion.

Dubbelganger -> RE: Hawking: Religion will be defeated by science (6/8/2010 11:29:22 PM)

It can't happen soon enough to suit me.

You are wrong on this. Most scientists are overwhelmingly atheist or agnostic...latest NAS (National Academy of Science) poll shows 94%. A discussion of that poll you'll find in the "Critical Thinking" thread, or you can just spend 5 mins of your time and google it.

RCdc -> RE: Hawking: Religion will be defeated by science (6/9/2010 12:32:36 AM)

I find the whole concept of a scientific war as abhorant as a holy one and makes him no different to any fundemental.

Hmmm... sounds a lot like science to me.[8|]
