NuevaVida -> Not allowed to be sick? (6/8/2010 8:55:35 PM)

Today I heard it all.  In my twenty-something-something years in the work force, I thought I had experienced any kind of corporate/management stupidity imaginable...until today.

Today our new boss (of about six months) told us, in all seriousness, she doesn't want us calling in sick anymore.  "I realize people get sick, but it's really inconvenient when you do, so try to do what you can to not call in sick."

Um, what?

Feel free to share any ridiculous work rules you've experienced.  Of course, I'm gonna have to play the rebel and call in sick this week...just because.

Moms one job- required a DR note when sick.

Yup, and a death in the family is not an excuse, except your own. And for that we require three days written notice in advance.

I few years back I was really reeeeeally sick.  High fever, throat infection, bronchial death warming over...boss at the time gave me huge grief for not coming in.

So I came in.  Two weeks before Christmas.  Worked on my deathbed practically, hacking up quite the storm and very feverish.  Everyone around me got sick, as I knew they would.  I told them I'm sorry, but take it up with the boss, who said I had to come in.  By the end of the 2nd day everyone complained and the boss sent me home to get better.  I was out longer than I would have been, had I gotten proper rest to begin with.  The week before Christmas, 3 other employees were out sick too, after catching it from me.

So yeah, I guess THAT was effective.  [8D]

You should all call in sick tomorrow!!  That's just ridiculous.

Wal-Mart caught a lot of flak for a similar policy during the H1N1 outbreak. They don't care when the shoppers get sick.

I heard that some restaurants also have similar policies. Makes me wonder about whether they may be losing their "A" health rating over it?

Shhhhh....I got plans for Friday.

You see LAST Friday I needed to leave at 3:00.  By 3:00 last Friday I was already on my 48th hour for the week.  I emailed boss-lady on Thursday morning to let her know.  Got a reply just before leaving on Friday that I really need to give more notice in requesting time off (uh, I didn't request it; I stated it).

Really?  Asking to work 48 instead of 50 hours is "time off?"

So, I actually have to leave early this Friday, too.  But since needing to leave early is such a problem, I'm just calling in sick.  This is what happens when you fuck around with totally productive people who work endless hours all week to get your projects done.  As Aretha sings it, "I got a new attitude..."

LOL! The same thing happened to me, years ago. I made sure to cough on the boss as he walked by, which is when he finally sent me home. the next week, he was out sick for 4 days. [8|]

we dont have a spoken policy against getting sick..

but if one of us plebes DOES get sick, it means that we are left with only 1 person with the job title to work 24 hrs.  There IS a 3rd person, but his availability is very limited (since he is the manager for 3 different properties.. so he has to be available for them all, due to the managerial duties,.. he's out of our office as much as he is in...)

so,.. yeah, don't get sick.

Oh yeah.  At the time I sat at the boss's desk and touched everything - mouse, phone, stapler, pens...yep yep yep...

Sounds like a staffing or cross training issue.  If I'm sick I'm taking care of me, baby.  Me me me.  They get plenty of me all through the rest of the year.

And in my group, there are 5 of us.  It's just that we're run in a Chicken Little environment these days.

GreedyTop -> RE: Not allowed to be sick? (6/8/2010 9:42:09 PM)

the issue is that the property owner is a cheap bastard, pays below what he should, offers no bennies.. and wonders why he cant get good help (besides me, dammit.. *sigh*)

If people are abusing sick time as "sick of working" time, I can understand why they would need to crack down.

On my last job, you were expected to either call it in to the answering service the night before, or if you woke up sick, to report in long enough that a relief operator could be dispatched. Where I am now, if you are sick, you are sick, but mental health days and early afternoon plans need to be pre-arranged. It's a simple courtesy to the people we work with.

There has to be a balance. As I'm seeing the situation presented here, Vida, my impression is that your employer may have a point. Go ahead and rebel, though. It's not like there would be 400 applicants at the door if they decide you're the one to make an example of.

Of the lot of us, one person does abuse it.  So they should take it up with her, not treat the group of us as though we're in grade school.

Totally agree on the balance part.  I average 50+ hours a week. I worked all of Memorial Day weekend because of a "crisis project."  The last time I called in sick was last October. The last time I took a scheduled day off was....um...in January, I think. The last time I needed to leave early (without logging in later at night and working a few more hours) was....well, I can't remember.  There are a lot of hiring managers at the company who would love to talk to me about joining their team, because, I must say, I'm great at what I do, and I work my ass off.

So yeah, when I'm given a lecture about only working 48 hours and then told I'm not allowed to be sick...I'm gonna have a problem with it.  I'm not seeing any balance here.  That's exactly the problem.

Forgot this part.  The last 3 times I asked, in advance, for a day off, it was denied because of "crisis project of the week", even though others take time off, because they're not put on these projects.

So today I am having an attitude problem about my job, and thought I'd have some fun with it on a thread. [;)]

Gotcha [;)]

Keeping the balance sometimes requires some force in the other direction.

If you get sick go into your boss's office and sneeze and hack all over her desk (special attention to her keyboard because it is hard to sterilize) then say "Did I do that?" in your most Erkle of voices

NuevaVida -> RE: Not allowed to be sick? (6/8/2010 10:15:06 PM)

LOL good one.  My other conscientious coworker has been coughing up a lung since last Thursday.  But she's there every day, contaminating the rest of us.

Of course, the boss canceled an afternoon meeting today because "I'm just kind of tired today."

We got us a winner, folks.
