I am looking to build some rigs that I thought up of and, like all the projects I do, I was wondering if anyone here knows some good credible places I can research for rig construction. I am looking to be building them mainly out of wood, yet if I need to move to metal for structural stability, so be it.
I do have an extensive carpentry background, all I really need is to make sure I have my figures right and how to upholster things with BDSM activities in mind. Any input at all will be grateful! Thanks!

What type of rigs are you trying to build?

Well I want to put a spanking bench together first, just so I can get a feel how it goes together.

i've done a couple of spanking benches in wood, and the simplest and easiest design to construct is a pair of equilateral triangular saw horses cropped at the apex to create a flat to help support the padded top and cleated just below the top and at the floor. The lumber used was 6/4 x 6 S4S poplar, and the cleats were attached using 3/8" carriage bolts.  For the top i created a tee using two pieces of the poplar glued with PL2000 and lag screwed together for the vertical and two pieces of 3/4 x 12 MDF for the top, also glued and lag screwed to the double 6/4 x 6.  Top is secured to horses with hurricane rafter ties.

A flat top? I was going to aim for a rounded top.
Thanks for the input though.
I had honestly never had thought of using saw horses. Then again, that might be me over thinking things.

This might work for you.

Or search for spanking bench images on Google and take a look for ideas.

i pad the MDF top with 4" of medium density upholstery foam and then cover with marine vinyl.  The foam should be 4" larger than the MDF boards in both width and length so it folds over the edge of the MDF when the vinly is stretched and stapled to the bottom of the MDF.  The end effect is a crowned/curved top.

Thanks you guys, this really helps alot.

With an extensive carpentry background, you might also try building ad traditional French Prie Dieu, (prayer bench). This project allows for great creativity and while extremely useful as a spanking implement, (customized to the user, allows for wonderful posterior presentation with hard attachment points), isn't necessarily viewed, (at least initially), as a traditional dungeon rig.
