Men have always known that women are interested in appearance, but not to the extent as it is today. In the 'Mad Men' era (50s early 60s), women had fewer economic opportunities, so they valued earning potential highly. The ordinary guy had a great chance to find an attractive woman who would keep house and bear children. They grew old together, and stayed married. How rare that is now!
As they have taken over much of the workplace, they have far fewer money woes, so they can afford to be much more picky.
Men who have striven for success believing it would enhance their marketability have found that that is no longer very important. Most women are going for younger men, for their looks. They are willing to support the 'underemployed' (or unemployed or even lazy) men. Then they complain that their men don't have a job.
This leads to fewer marriages, fewer children, and less stability in society.
Men now have to spend much more time in grooming. They must have full heads of hair, clean-shaven, no body hair. Otherwise, they are relegated to the dust bin of life-long bachelorhood.
And if they are 'lucky' enough to get married, their wives will cheat on them. Two of my three wives have done that; they just wanted 'variety'.
This is improvement? Not for men. But, of course, that doesn't count for much these days.
