"The law enforcement system has unwittingly become a tool of the debt collectors," said Michael Kinkley, an attorney in Spokane, Wash., who has represented arrested debtors. "The debt collectors are abusing the system and intimidating people, and law enforcement is going along with it."

There`s two sides here.

You seem to be focusing on just one and screaming a lot.

What about the people who loose their money and seek to get it back?

Would you give up your right to get money you gave someone who then stiffed you?

I suppose the Jubilee.

Long live the Queen indeed! we're all ecstatic at the prospect of her diamond jubilee in 2012 - 50 years on the throne!

I bet her bum hurts. By which I mean her backside, rather than Charlie.

But she aint gonna make up your losses m'dear. She's running short on funds herself what with having no payrise in god knows how many years.

Lady E, how about people who have medical debts over there on fixed incomes?

Debt is slavery.

The only personal debt that someone should go into is on a house (and not over their head), and a car - but only if needed for work, and not a new one if they are tight financially.

My general view is if you can't pay for it right then, right now, you shouldn't buy it.

The only things that I owe, other than the electric bill and stuff like that, is an occasional credit card from when I take a trip, and don't want to carry a lot of cash, or when I need one to rent a car, or pay for a hotel.

Then they are paid off absolutely as soon as possible.

I've had two cards canceled because I "didn't keep enough on the balances".

Absolutely. I've got a real simple rule of thumb - if I  don't have the cash this month, I can't afford it this month. There are very rare times that I'll make an exception, but under no circumstances do I ever carry a balance on a credit card. Credit cards are for travel and emergencies.

I don't have a lot of money, but I have absolutely zero debt, and I can't even imagine how anyone could sleep at night with $20,000 or $30,000 of credit card debt. It's incomprehensible to me. As far as I'm concerned, with very few exceptions anyone who regularly carries any credit card debt is living beyond their means, plain and simple.

Yeah sadly this is how all consumer credit is working these days. Once upon a time (in the good old days (1 BCC)) we could depend on the reckless spender to stimulate the economy now this is only happening in Brazil.

No I do not.   The police should not be used as a weapon for credit card debts.

Cricky Pops do you not pay any attention at all...nobody in the UK has medical debts....medical debts are a uniquely American thing.

Indeed, we have this thing called the National Health Service into which all of those of us fortunate enough to have an income pay a contribution from our incomes that is adjusted according to those incomes. When we then need medical treatment we can see the GP and be referred if necessary for whatever treatment we might need and we dont then pay another penny for it, apart from a script fee of £7-20, and if unemployed or of one of a dozen other exempted situations one doesnt even pay that.

I heartily recommend it.

But then I am a socialist.

The thing that did make me laugh was the way there was far more fuss in the media over punk's 25th than there was over her Maj's last jubilee. The punks won at last!
