As a rule the people that want you to join the website are going to get some kind of kickback from the website for getting you to join. Often the person will tell you that you can join for free, but you have to use your credit card info for "age verification." But be sure to read the fine print! Sometimes the "free" time is only for a few days...then they charge you. Other sites will let you join for free, but then share your info with other sites that aren't free and you will find you have been automatically signed up. This is not to say that there are not some reputable sites out there, but it only takes one to really mess up your credit/debit account.
And yes, this is the voice of experience...foolishly. I was talked into joining one site, and within minutes I was feeling uneasy about it, so I contacted the place and immediately cancelled my account. Within seconds, literally, I was receiving emails from other sites thanking me for joining, and charging me for every email they sent to me! In minutes I had over $200 in charges added to my debit card. I contacted my bank and they told me to first contact all the sites concerned and demand my money be re-credited to my account. I did, and they said it would be done, but when I checked my account the money had not been put back in. I then contacted the bank again and had to scrap my debit card and have a new card issued. Eventually, several months later, my bank was finally able to get all of my money back.
So my advice is, don't join any of them. If the person really has an interest in you then yes, there is no reason your free webcam should not be adequate. If you are intent on joining then use one of those pre-paid debit cards with a minimal amount of money available on it. Usually, if a person is intent on getting me to join for "free" but the site needs credit card info I tell the person that if they really want me to join then they should use their own credit card info to sign me up. So far no one has been willing to do that.
