I painted my first nursery (my boy child's room) with sky-blue paint, used sponges to make white "clouds" on the wall, and hung up some disney characters floating with "balloons" I had bought from a garage sale. Every time I walked in that room, it felt like I was high in the sky. It was a simple job, with a very elegant look. (well...except for the disney characters...)

Take the time to tape over anything you don't want painted before you start. If you are getting a special mixed color, try to buy all the paint you will need at the same time, so you have a better chance of the color matching from can to can. Buy extra paint and store it somewhere safe for touch ups and accidents. Wear old clothes and lock the cat in another room.

lol.. I hear ya!  I loved the color of the room when he was first born.  Now it makes me ill.  I hate it now.

Here is another hint that will help your paint cover well.  If you buy your primer and paint at the same store, most of them will tint your primer the same color as your paint for free.  They dont put the same amount of pigment in the primer but it is enough to give it a tint.  If your primer and paint are close to the same color, you get MUCH better coverage and a lot less going back later to take care of "missed spots"
I had a contractor do some work on my little commecial building for a tenant because I didnt have time and, frankly, I HATE finishing drywall and he had never even heard of that trick but he told me that it saved him so much labor on that job that he cut me a break on the price.

Today's helpful painting hint.

If painting with latex paint, get your brush wet BEFORE dipping into the paint. It will make clean up easier.

ty LaT ..!!

PeonForHer -> RE: Calling all DIY Bitches (6/15/2010 8:29:40 AM)

I use big brushes to paint straight lines - they're steadier.  Especially if dirty, sugar-soap the walls first - they're much easier to paint afterwards.  And think about using silk rather than matt on the walls if it's a kid's bedroom - silk's easier to clean.

And, is no-one going to make a joke about the phrase 'having the painters in' - or is that just a Brit expression?

I do this for a living, make ready and painting apartments between tenants.

I never use tape or tarps, becasue I have found them to make more of a mess. I keep my paint tray on a plastic bag on the kitchen counter to minimize bending and practice mindfullness with the rollers and brushes. I do the whole apartment that way. Its pretty easy to paint straight lines, but you might want to cover or tape around any fancy light fixtures or expensive woodwork, especially if its in a tight corner or akward space.

You can get small rollers with narrow trays for them, and those come in really handy for small rooms, spot painting, and tight spaces, behind the toilet narrow spaces between cabinets ect. You get the manuverability of a brush with the speed of a roller, I have been known to paint a whole room with just these.

If you do the ceiling, do that first and keep in mind that if you have a rough textured ceiling, it will cause the roller to emmit a fine spray that will cover everything in the room including you! Also take it in stages and take your time, you can really strain your neck and shoulders doing this. Stop and strech often. (I HATE painting ceilings!)

Usualy I am painting right over the same color, so I dont need primer. I have used paint with primer in it, every now and then a tenant paints a wall or two some other color. But found I just have to paint again over it with our standard white to make it match the rest of the unit, so now I just use Kilz when that happens, its cheaper. Kilz also kills mold, so if you have problems with that I would definantely use it before painting.

I have a lot of fun doing this, sometimes Shepard gives me nasty little "assignments" do do while at work. Makes the work day a little more interesting I say.

ty ! Thankfully I don't need to do the ceiling ... I purchased all of my supplies. I'm going tomorrow to home depot to get the paint

domiguy -> RE: Calling all DIY Bitches (6/15/2010 11:53:09 AM)

Don't say I that I never did anything for you. This is a cool thing. Get an overhead projector and go to Kinkos and have them make a transparency of the images that you want to put on your little dude's wall. Scooby doo's, women on all fours, Dale Earnhardt naked etc.

Then trace away. Even a skilless, talentless hack like yourself can create something that looks like it was done by a pro. If you weren't so stretched out I would bang you.
