hlen5 -> What Are You Doing.... (6/10/2010 3:56:13 PM)

to be a responsible citizen? In another thread I asked for leadership from either side of the aisle to solve our problems. That starting the wheels in my mind turning.

I believe our government is a reflection of we the people. We get the government we deserve. In order to have a governement of integrity and efficiency, we have to vote said officials into office.

So what are you personally doing to accomplish this? Are you informed about not just national politics, but local? Are you voting not just nationally but locally? Are you (just) carping about the sad state of affairs we're in? Are you personally practicing good citizenship?

I'm looking forward to the answers!

I'm a research junkie. I read many of the bills which go before congress and the cases which go to the higher courts. I read the opinions on the decisions by the Justices and I keep a watchful eye on who is spending what where. I see who voted for what, determine if that lines up with what *I* think is best for my country, myself and my family. I always vote and encourage others to research and vote. I stump, give time and money to candidates I think will do the right thing. I listen to both sides of an argument then use thoughtful consideration to draw my own conclusions. I can be swayed by logic and reason but not hyperbole or emotion. I pay my fair share of taxes but not more than that and I choose my charities selectively and give to those who I believe are also trying to do the right thing for my causes. I raised my children to be productive and polite and they, in turn, are raising my grandchildren the same way. My children are also informed voters. I pay my bills on time and purchase quality goods over a quantity of goods so I don't muck up refuse centers by continually throwing away crap. I am ardent about recycling (even before I moved to Portugal and then Italy where it's a law) and I am a conservationist. Himself and I put a total of 3800 km on the car in the last 12 months. We take trams, trains, walk etc when we can and use things up before throwing them out. The two exceptions I make to all of that is that I do get a new computer about every six months and I do fly quite a bit but I think I more than make up for the carbon footprint with my diligence in other areas.

Is that the stuff you were looking for?

Yes, this is what I was looking for. It's so easy to get overwhelmed with the magnitude of problems we face.

I recycle and I vote. I used to volunteer and need to start doing so again.

I am making personal investments into American Brewing Companies, generally in quantities easy enough to keep cold on hot days

I've stopped robbing liquor stores.

I am keeping lists of names of those who organise or take part in community events, because I dont understand that there is a difference between community organisation and communist organisation. I also dont know what communist means either, but I just know it must be evil, 'cause the TV told me when I was growing up in the 70s.

I then forward these lists once a month to MI5. I know theyre grateful, because they intervened (on the quiet of course) when I was prosecuted for harassment and various public order offences, to have the whole thing dealt with, resulting in me getting a month or so under section, which means their protection in a special facility. I met Jesus there, or at least a guy who claimed to be Jesus.

Why would you need a new computer every six months?

I'm much more personally engaged on local matters than I am the national. The big ticket items run to water issues (I live in a desert, and our aquifer ain't what it used to be), land use, two separate counties that like to use my area as a dumping ground for their problems, and a proposed ban on plastic grocery bags. When I go to the polls, I know who I'm voting for, and who I think needs to get fired for incompetence.

The most recent item I stuck my nose into was an attempt by the state to place a particularly awful and dangerous sexual predator in a half-way house here, despite the fact that he has no connection to our community. That battle has put light on something that I suspect the state's parole organization would much prefer to keep in the shadows, so the issue might just be getting started.

Oh. We also have a local mayor here who seems determined to get a 60 Minutes profile onto his resume, right above dragging his city into a fight with the ACLU. That's always entertaining.
