My parents were both Chicago Democrats, I'm more of a independent centrist.

My parents were both democrats. The first time or two that I voted I listened to the union 'CWA' and voted democrat. That all changed when Jimmy Carter got elected. I saw the error of my ways, voted for Ronald Reagan and to this day vote for conservatives.

Fiscally Conservative (PRIMARY ISSUE), and by that I mean actual fiscal conservative not bush era psuedo conservative crap... As in I'd balance the fuck out of that budget, or that shit would stop moving at all. I have no pet projects, other than a balanced budget.

As for the rest, of course I'm all about individual freedom, so, anyone that is a fiscal conservative by my standards, and isn't a fascist, will get my support.

My parents, while never spoke of politics outside of uninformed complaints or whanot, I'm 100% positive would be in the liberal camp of thinking.

All right I lied.  TWO questions.

Do you consider yourself to be liberal or conservative, and what were your parents' viewpoints as you were growing up?

I'll go first.

I consider myself a con (although I'm probably moderate), and my parents were very liberal as I grew up.

Liberal on pretty much everything....economic and social.

Though there is a touch of the conservative about me....in the sense that I think the state of human nature is animal....so tear away the civilised institutions and you will see chaos....which is a point of view that doesn't lend toward Liberatarianism.

I believe that free trade is a better option than protectionism. I believe you have to speculate to accumulate...in other words I'm a risk taker.....and definitely not in keeping with the 'fiscal conservatism' that seems to dominate these boards.

Liberal pretty much all ends up.....though I do believe that you stay out of the business of other nations...which can still be liberal....there's liberal interventionism and there's 'do as I would be done to'.....god again eh.

Anyway.....just liberal really. I'm the sort of person who thinks 'strength in order' is bollocks....usually promulgated by the 'weak' because they don't have much to offer outside of cheap soundbites.....contradiction in terms eh.....and it always ends in tears with the 'strength in order' lot.

Liberal and to be honest pretty pleased with myself that I think life should be competitive yet compassionate....that is Liberalism to me......

My Father...conservative...partly because he was in the Royal Air Force......Mother liberal......

Steven, I'm an Independant (moderate)(populist) like you in that I don't like the Dems or Repubs.
My parents were Irish Catholic working class Democrats from Boston, Mass.
But, they voted for Eisenhower in the 50's but there were a lot of WW 2 vets around then and "Ike" was very popular. My sister has a button mixed in with family pics "I LIKE IKE!"
In those days the Dems were for "the workingman". It wasn't really a "liberal" party. It'd be a stretch to call JFK "liberal." Today they're for the no working, no speaka de english man.
If my parents were alive today they wouldn't recognise the Democratic party much less vote for them.

Ich.....etc etc......must have been a liberal statement? A conservative would say: "Berlin's all right but it's nothing to do with me".

I'm a conservative when it comes to matters abroad.....whatever goes on outside of these borders...you're welcome to it and I personally couldn't care less.......though a liberal inside of these borders.....

Slightly left of centre. My Dad's a lot more leftist than I am, while my mum is so politically clueless that she still thinks nu Labour was left wing.

I grew up in a very strong Labour household. My mom and dad always voted Labour. I tend to steer more towards the left now, and Bush's gimp boy Blair didn't make me want to vote Labour at any point...

Was it P.J. O'Rourke who once said "A Libertarian is a conservative that still gets high."?

Lets put it this way. I'm an old school libertarian that thinks Ron Paul and Pat Buchanan are barking conservative moonbats, trying to subvert Libertarianism into some sort of tea drinking, backwoods, trailer park Nazi party.

I also think that our children are going to live in a United States thats a third world shit hole twenty years from now because of Obama's "Bread and Circuses" bail outs and yearly stimulus packages.

OMFG have you a clue what "third world" means?

I didn't use that in my post. But I'll attempt to answer what I think it means.

Well, it generally means, that they are liberal in their views on such things as abortion, gay marriage, right to privacy, etc.... Whereas, in recent years, and it's arguable, those claiming a general conservative label infers support of such things as the patriot act, pro-life, anti-gay marriage, etc..

As far as I go, in regards to welfare since that is what you are targeting, I think there is to much of all forms of welfare, both individual, and corporate, that doesn't mean, one can't share some typical liberal viewpoints otherwise. Also, as far as my views go the military is way to big as well, so, I'd be happy to slash there as well. Additionally, I do think some social programs are necessary, just not to the level, you'd probably like.

You may not be fully cognizant of "the level I would probably like"
For starters corporate welfare exceeds individual welfare by no less than 1000 orders of magnitude.
The military's job is to protect america not corporate amerika.
Crimes without victims are not crimes.
Reduce the first to zero, the second to it's legal function and the third would free up 70% of our judicial and correctional budget to prosecute real crimes and shorten the civil calendar to days not years.
Anyone with fourth grade math skills would be able to figure out that personal taxes (income, property, sales and use taxes) would plunge to a tenth of what they are now.

Thank Need for quoting you, Thom.

Because "socially liberal" doesn't mean gov't handouts, Thom. Not that I think a "poor tax" and a safety net aren't appropriate and morally correct, mind you, but I'm referencing liberal values when I use that term. You know all about the concepts of individual liberty, I'm sure.

Back under the bridge with you.
