Deflation Is Good

Dominant Social Theme: Fiat money deflation is good ... for the powers-that-be, not for you and me!

Free-Market Analysis: We wrote an article about inflation and price inflation recently and came down on the side of inflation (both price and monetary) – in the long term anyway.

The inflationist camp can now leave the room because none of us can stand to hear their anguished cries, angry foot-stomping and teary, selfish objections. How pathetic!
What to Expect: Here is a very short list of what can be expected — and trust me, this is a much more palatable list than the ones I have analyzed involving an unthinkable and devastating hyperinflation. So put away the placards and protest signs. We all need to get on board with paying down debt like any responsible citizen debtor would do. We owe big-time, and this is but a taste of how it may cost us: • Major employment reductions in the public-service sector • Rationing of health care services, fewer nurses, health practitioners and support staff • Larger class-size in schools, and large reductions in the number of teachers • Reduced public pensions and benefits, including social service payments • Interest rates that will gradually rise and eventually settle at around six percent • Strikes, labor unrest and supply chain breakdowns • Widespread unemployment affecting virtually every sector of the economy. No one will be spared • An expansion of public works programs and green initiatives • Civil disobedience, arrests, targeting of threatening movements by security agencies and government • Increasing taxation, particularly on the wealthy and buoyant businesses • Shortages of all kinds and the loss of variety on store shelves • An erosion in the standard of living for most, but particularly for those who are in debt • Cutbacks in military spending, defense, coastal patrols and overseas engagements • Cherished programs that governments usually support will be eliminated • Larger police forces, prison expansions and a judiciary that is strained to the breaking point • Cities, states and counties will be denied bailouts, forcing them into bankruptcy • Services that protect the environment, animal rights and special interests will be reduced Universities will close

. Conclusion: One might eventually call this state of affairs stagflation, ultimately, especially as it will not be accompanied by much hiring. However, we think it may well be reported, generically, as "deflation." The austerity measures to be put into place as a result will be at least partially designed to generate compliance with a new and more global monetary system – one that could be floated when the pain generally becomes intolerable. Seen from this perspective, deflation, whether or not it exists in reality, could simply serve as another bogeyman (meme) to stampede the West and eventually the rest of the world toward global governance./snip

Deflation is good for those on fixed incomes and those who rent.  Inflation is good for homeowners.

Making the wealthy pay their fair share of income taxes is good - I think if it happens it will go a long way to fix budget deficit problems. I think conservatives are brainwashed by ideology - their answer for every economic problem is to cut taxes and spending.

As far as this 'stagflation' approach is concerned I have no doubt whatsoever radical extreme spending cuts are exactly what Steven Harper has been itching to do in Canada but hasn't been able to so far because he only has a minority government. It's always about the money. Wealthy conservatives just don't want to pay taxes. So it's cut, cut, cut taxes and cut spending more.

Hyperinflatio can work wonders you take a loan out of say 450 000 you make roughly 50 grand a year hyper inflation kicks in you still owe 450 000 bu you nowmake 1 million a week how fast do you pay off your lans

Deflation would be great the issue is how do you get there without putting millions and i am talking in the us like 100 million people out of work

Brain, tell that to Tim Geithner. He didn't pay his taxes for,.....how many years?

Steven Harper is brainwashed by ideology that he learned getting his economics degree - too much of the invisible hand of Adam Smith. I don't know the man's net worth and I suspect he has been influenced by some evangelical Christianity as well.

Hunky, do I have to come over there with a chrome vnadium wrench to beat this into your head or what. Even Thomas fucking Jefferson knew this.

How can I explain this-----------------------------------------

Your car engine has pistons, they move to produce power. In the same way inflation and deflation of any part of the market is analogous to a piston in an engine. To beget the wealth, the piston runs and produces it out of nothing. The movement of the piston is equable with the change in relative value of any commodity. And don't claim little miss innocent here, you plan to do the same fucking thing with silver. I just wish I could afford more but it doesn't really matter in the shadow of my true wealth. But da pump must pump, and every relative change in relative values out there makes someone money and theefore is percieved as productive. In that way this function works exactly like the piston in a pump. And your car engine is really nothing but an extremely modified air pump.

So change=money.

Can anyone even grasp this or am I wasting my time ?

I am not so sure about it; maybe the "invisible hand" of the markets would work better dealing with he current crisis. We will never know for sure. The "invisible hand" has been shackled and people (like you) believe mass-manipulation of the markets is the way to go. The truth is at some point the price must be paid. The later the more painful.

I think youll find the new socialist government in Greece walked in quite unwittingly to a situation where the previous government had cooked the books, in collusion with one Goldman Sachs for years. It was only on checking the books that the problem was discovered and the socialist government took the right steps to put things right.

It sounds a bit like another country I know, where some guy became president and walked in on an utter mess. Looks like he's being made to carry the can for the previous administration too, just like in Greece.

Brain, I'm going to disagree with you here.

1. While I acknowledge that taxes will have to be raised, the fundamental problem is that we spend more than we take in.  Thus, the deficit is rising.  Simply increasing revenues overlooks the midset that we MUST reduce spending.

An analogy is a household that spends more than it takes in.  Getting a second job, etc. will stem the immediate crisis, but unless the problems with spending are dealt with, revenue increases will only prove to help the problem, not fix it.

2. I firmly believe that spending must be cut. Here in Colorado, we have a law called TABOR that requires spending to rise no more than population growth and inflation allows.  So new spending is fine AS LONG AS corresponding cuts in other areas free up the money.

3. I agree with you that tax cuts are pandering and ridiculous if spending is not checked.  Like the good provider who simply goes into debt so his family can afford shiny new toys.  However, while Republicans have long advocated tax cuts based on a stimulated economy magically creating enough tax revenue to offset the cuts (how's THAT workin' for ya?), I wouldn't say that it's a conservative mentality.  And unfortunately it might be politically impossible for Democrats to resist deficit spending soon... Obama is already Bushifying his economics...

The social programs which the American Military is a part of are the issue if you pulled out of most of the rest of the world and then cut the US military to what is needed to actually defend The US and basically let the world go hang the american taxes would be able to pay down the massive debt would be able to fix most of the problems in the US. In 2008 the US spent 564 billion dollars are its military alone. Imagine if that had instead went to everything else needed in the US like actual decent fixing of the infrastructure Increasing the education budget giving immigration the money they need how different would the US be

Deflation is good for those on fixed income...NOT good for those on interest rate sensitive income as they have fallen.

Rent is almost always fixed and while I've seen CPI clauses (the rate and schedule that rent goes up) but, I've never seen rents go down.

FEI, the definition of stagflation is rising prices during a recession.

Oh, BTW, deflation is good for the consumer not good for the investor, so who do you think wins ?

I live in Calgary Alberta there is no rent regulation but i have seen it go up and down all depends on supply and demand. When the economy crashed and people left the prices dropped when it was booming they were charging and arm and a leg. I even had a land lord drop my rent by 100 per month because of this when i said I would move elsewhere
