I knew it I knew it and I said it.

The republicans are trying to get taxpayers to pay for the cleanup, anything over their 75 million cap.

Fuck`n A!!

That`s a piss amount considering how much this will cost us,not just in clean up but also the costs borne by the economy`s lost business.

Republicans have also blocked efforts to raise that cap.

Bastards.

WHY? It's not the taxpayers fault. What a stupid idea and an insult to the American People, especially those suffering in the Gulf. What an idiot.

GOP Leader Boehner: Taxpayers Should Pay For This BP Oil Mess

Congressional Democrats and the White House are toying with different ways to force BP to cover the costs of damages from the Gulf oil spill. But they face stiff opposition from industry...and it seems leading Republicans.

In response to a question from TPMDC, House Minority Leader John Boehner said he believes taxpayers should help pick up the tab for the clean up.

Note his semi-retraction at the end of the article:

Late update
: Boehner spokesman Michael Steel emails to say "Boehner made a general statement about who is responsible for the spill, and the federal government oversight was clearly lacking, but he has said repeatedly that BP is responsible for the cost of the cleanup."

I really dont see how BP should avoid liability at all - they employ twice as many in the US as they do in the UK, their shareholders are 40% US (25% UK) and from what I've read they have a great deal of their assets in the US too.

But as Ive said before, claims on BP will likely be passed on to the rig owners/operators and thence to whomever made whatever part that failed (there is talk here of Halliburton).

The problem for the US taxpayer is that by having bailed out insurers, they have already paid and may be called on to pay again. On top of that any regulatory failings, whether there was collusion or not, may well attract liability to the authorities, where again the US taxpayer will pay.

And lets not forget that the dividends from BP that the WH is shouting about - 40% goes to US shareholders, being several billions of dollars last year, with a significant tax element deriving from that too.

The accountability side isnt good news for anyone, just as this damned leak isnt good news for anyone either or the explosion that killed those workers wasnt good news for their families. Someone, more likely several someones are for the high jump here.
