Owner59 -> A Bailout For BP ?!?!! (6/10/2010 7:16:29 PM)

Is it possible?

How would average Americans react to any politician proposing one?

Considering recent history,it isn`t that far beyond the pale.

The British want us to stop bashing them.

WTF is bashing Britan?!!

Love what Bita said...

DarkSteven -> RE: A Bailout For BP ?!?!! (6/10/2010 8:04:38 PM)

WTF? The banks were bailed out when their entire industry went down.  BP is the only one hurting; their competitors are doing just fine.  If other oil companies bought them in pieces and changed the management style, that would be great.  And if BP's stock continues to plummet, not unrealistic.  No bailout necessary.

Of course it is. No comparison at all.

If that doesn't spark the revolution, nothing will.

 Many people are assuming that BP will file a Chapter 11 and bail soon.

Matt Simmons, Dr. Doom of the Gulf Coast spill - Jun. 9, 2010

I am thinking Americans will end up paying as they normally do, it is the American way after all,
isn't it?
What I find a bit ludicrous are those that actually think BP can or would pay for all the damages, this crap will take years to clean up, whenever it actually is stopped.

Why BP won't pay for full Gulf spill clean-up -- Signs of the Times News

Who here seriously expects BP to fit the entire bill for this?

Thousands of people's jobs and the economy is wrapped around BP and offshore drilling generally.

No one is going to let BP go bankrupt.

If they don't go bankrupt guess WHO/or WHAT will bail them out?
Either way, Americans are going to pay, one way or another.

Musicmystery -> RE: A Bailout For BP ?!?!! (6/10/2010 8:54:30 PM)

No doubt we'll end up with substantial costs.

For one, this will trash an already weak economy.

We agree on two points now!
Next you will agree that we are headed for a Depression.

No. You always jump to extreme positions.

lol, I have not "jumped" on anything new, I have been saying this for a few years.
We are certainly on the road, give it about 2-3 more years.
I don't jump on bandwagons, I am actually very consistent in my beliefs unless or until proven wrong.
I have felt this way since 2007.
This economy is headed for the toilet.

It's just going there s l o w l y.
Welcome to the next Depression.

I honestly hope I am wrong on this.
But, I don't see this economy getting better in a REAL way, anytime soon.

I don't believe political bullshit "hype" about things getting better.
When I really believe that things are REALLY getting better for most people in America, I will

lead the cheers.
But that shit hasn't happened in 3 years, and it damn sight ain't happening no time soon.

Take off the fucking rainbow shades.
People better learn to get back to basics, and focus on what they need to live on and survive, and
most will be okay.
Living "simply" and getting down to basics, will be taking on new meaning.

VAcontroldom -> RE: A Bailout For BP ?!?!! (6/10/2010 9:04:32 PM)

Bailout is kind of an overused term

The US Government "bailout" of banks made sense. Banks make money over economic cycles. It wasn't a bailout, it was an investment and the government has earned a profit on its TARP investment in banks

The US Government "bailout" of the auto industry never made sense. The US auto industry hasn't made money for a long time, except Ford, who wasn't included. It wasn't a bailout, it was a gift to the auto unions, where for the first time unsecured interests came before secured ones. We will never get all our money back.

If BP needs a "bailout" it will only be because the government forces BP to pay damages in excess of those required by law in the 1990 oil pollution cleanup law passed after Exxon didn't do the right thing.

In that case, if the US invested in BP as a "bailout" it would be more like bank TARP where the government will make money because oil companies are profitable over economic cycles.

If they get all that cash out of BP and get it to our citizens and we own part of the company, that's better than sticking to the law and then the government paying our citizens and we don't own part of BP

The part where there is no legal precedent and it seems to clearly violate the applicable law isn't slowing these guys down at all, as BP is the leading provider of oil to the Pentagon and is the number one lessee of the US government and they seem intent on blackmailing them (which is fine with me)

You stop with the stupid digs.

In response to economic data, you just come back with your "beliefs."

Fucking shades yourself.

You may be surprised.

We ultimately reaped a profit from the old Chrysler bailout.

The British want us to stop bashing them.

London mayor tells Obama: Stop bashing Britain...

Boris Johnson is a nice but dim public schoolboy, a proper upper class twit, ( think Harry Enfield and your understanding is not far off the mark ) with his own ideas about things, and he tends to be very vociferous about things the proper government prefer not to comment about, but it was noted last night on the BBC Question Time, a show where politicians get a grilling on their affairs, that Obama's reference to BP as British petroleum, which it has not been called since 1999 when the company adopted  the simple BP, he was perhaps making a point about the fact that BP is a British company. What's this, did he expect the lap dog to lie down and roll over, was this a stab in a direction of another country, a safe bet given the special relationship America might have had with Britain

UK sentiment over Obama's remarks suggest special relationships mean nothing, his use of the old term for the company was an obvious stab at Britain and it was not very welcome with remarks made about the special relationship only being there when it suits the US administration.

But it was also noted last evening that though BP was British Petroleum and was the Anglo Iranian oil company, it has an equal number of American directors as British and of it's workforce, two thirds are American so ideas about crushing a company might affect America in more ways than is thought of, for BP like so many other corporations is in truth, a multicontinental operation.

Interestingly or not, the sub contractors that drilled the hole that is causing so many problems was an American outfit, Haliburton I believe was mentioned.

(Edited due to misbehaving keyboard button)

servantforuse -> RE: A Bailout For BP ?!?!! (6/11/2010 4:16:27 AM)

Not to worry. Obama said that he will make BP pay for the clean up. He hasn't kept any of his other promises but maybe this one is somehow different.
