Did anyone hear Fresh Air (with Terry Gross) on NPR today? She interviewed 2 people about natural gas drilling and discussed a method nicknamed "fracking" (hydraulic fracturing I think). One of the men interviewed made a documentary called Gasland. In the course of the interviews the documentarian said that a number of states have a law that if in a 1200 acre parcel of land, 60% of the landowners lease their land for natural gas drilling, the remaning 40% are required to lease their land also. Please find and listen to this program.

Don't believe everything you hear on NPR. There are a lot of liberals on there. Switch to the EIB and listen to Rush.

I believe you have mentioned on more than one occasion that rush was an entertainer and not a news reporter. Do you have anything to validate that npr does not report the facts? Do you have any data to refute what hlen posted or what npr reported? If not then why the waste of bandwidth?

Smith tool co. had a couple of subsidiaries... dynadrill and whipsnake if my memory serves me who pionered that technology fifty or sixty years ago. It allowed a drill rig on shore to reach out under the ocean. They were selling a lot of that hardware to kuwait (bp) back in the 80's. The kuwatis were using it to access the iraqi oil fields to the north of them(rumalla). When sodamninsane figgured out what the kuwaitis were doing he asked april gelispie the u.s. ambasador to iraq if the u.s. would mind if he were to reincorporate kuwaite back into iraq. Iraq has always felt that kuwait was part of iraq. After consultation with the white house gilespi informed sodamninsane that the "u.s. had no interest in iraq's domestic affairs". The rest is old news.

A major problem with recovery by fracturing is that it's trashing people's water wells by contaminating the aquifers. This technique also uses a lot of water, and the expelled water is killing off pasturage, which is already fragile as hell. Believe it or not, crusty Republican ranchers are teaming up with environmentalists to get this better regulated or stopped outright.

I concure with you about fracing but I was refering to "whipsnaking or slant drilling as it is sometimes called. The drill stem is somewhat flexible and the bit is turned by an internal flex shaft kinda like a speedometer cable. It has been rampant for the past fifty or so years. Just another way for the oil corporations to steal what they are too cheap to buy.

The whole subject of destroying our environment becasue we're too lazy to switch to clean energy makes me furious. It makes me furious that a landowner can be forced to allow drilling on their land. Who were the idiots or gas/oil stooges in the legislature that passed that into law? Some of the people in the documentary (Gasland) can SET THE WATER COMING OUT OF THEIR TAPS ON FIRE!!
