FAA Closes down Gulf of Mexico Air Traffic
All aircraft operations are prohibited except those flights authorized by ATC, routine flights supporting offshore oil operations; federal, state, local and military flight operations supporting oil spill recovery and reconstitution efforts; and air medical and law enforcement operations.

You left off the part where the ceiling of the restricted zone is 3000 feet AGL. IOW low altitude air space is reserved for working aircraft. This has been in place for a while now and hasn't prevented pilots from phtographing the extent of the spill. Who ever told you this was some evil plot assumed you wouldn't read the NOTAM.

housesub4you -> RE: FAA Closes down Gulf of Mexico Air Traffic (6/12/2010 3:11:43 AM)

You also left out the part that BP has been pushing the Coast Gard and the FCC to close the airspace down because they are attempting to downplay the damage.  They figure if Americans don't see the damage it would be a big deal, This was all over the news last week  Their fine will be based on the amount of oil being released, which is why their figures are always lower than every other scientists or group looking into it

There where reporters last week being told by BP the airspace was closed, just like BP has people on the beaches telling people public beaches are closed

So you support the oil spill?

No. But I also don't support mid air collisions.

3000 feet is not so high that you can't see the extent of the spill.

servantforuse -> RE: FAA Closes down Gulf of Mexico Air Traffic (6/12/2010 7:41:33 AM)

This was done for the safety of the pilots. General aviation aircraft ( private ) rarely fly below 3000 ft. It will have no effect on commercial flights.

pahunkboy -> RE: FAA Closes down Gulf of Mexico Air Traffic (6/12/2010 9:53:55 AM)

Then you think we have fair and balanced reporting?

xBullx -> RE: FAA Closes down Gulf of Mexico Air Traffic (6/12/2010 10:18:02 AM)

At least someone on this board has the use of his common sense and doesn't make everything into a political agenda, for now.

Are you talking about the Gulf specifically (glide distance to land, maybe?) or GA in general? I have a Cherokee and rarely fly ABOVE 3000 agl.

Why?  Afraid of heights?

DarwinsLilHelper -> RE: FAA Closes down Gulf of Mexico Air Traffic (6/12/2010 11:33:46 AM)

Not to worry. The Modified Boing 747 Cargo Carriers that carry the Evil Haliburton Weather Machine that caused Hurricane Katrina and are now being used by the Obama Administration to alter oceanic currents to cover more of Florida's coast line with oil, thus punishing Florida Republicans for installing the illegitimate usurper George W. Bush over Al Gore in the 2000 Presidential election using rigged hanging chads that confused 12 blind little old ladies who would have voted strait Democratic Ticket...Can Fly Well over Angels 3.

ThatDaveGuy69 -> RE: FAA Closes down Gulf of Mexico Air Traffic (6/12/2010 11:41:36 AM)

Don't you see it?! It's all a big conspiracy, man! Katrina, 9/11, the oil spill... It's all tied together - why can't you all see it?! It's right there in front of you! Don't you get it? Al Gore was SUPPOSED to lose to Bush! But he got too popular so they had to rig the election in FL but it was a rush job and they got sloppy. Katrina was sent to clear-out the lower 9th so they can build casinos, don't you get it?! But that didn't work the way they wanted it to so now they got BP to open a hole in the ovean floor to pollute the southern coastline so they can buy-up all that beachfront land real cheap. How can you not see this?! It's right there in front of you!

My brother has a Cessna 182. I fly with him often. He is instrument rated and we are usually flying at the 6000 to 9000 range. Going to Florida or Baltimore usually 9000 to 10,000.

pahunkboy -> RE: FAA Closes down Gulf of Mexico Air Traffic (6/12/2010 12:21:41 PM)

As grave as this spill is- I am surprised that a few think it is all fun and games.

I mean this spill has massive and over a month.  Every attempt to fix it has failed.

The media is not allowed to film it.

--ecosystems being destroyed and will never be repaired.

So- HA HA HA HA.   Yeah those rotten Dems,  those rotten GOP-  that will show them.  We will "win" the next election.

!!!

If only my team gets in office- then the country will be run well.

Anyone that gets in the way of "my"  team- is a tin foil hat.

The folly here and thru out Politics section is beyond belief.

Weather it is this blunder of 6 others massive blunders...  blame the other party.

We live in a corporation.   But people only see the saviors to be Democrats or Tea Partyers.

-- what a let down.

Are you kidding me. I've had nothing but live ocean floor web cams broadcast to me 24/7 and pictures of oil covered sea birds and Crabs ad nausem for the last month. The only way I could see more pictures and video of the oil spill would be if I had a digital projector strapped to my head and my eyes held open with some sort of A Clock Work Orange contraption that shined Oil spill video directly onto my fucking retinas while I slept.

Gee..Sure would be nice if we could drill in Alaska...This problem would have been fixed in a couple of days and we'd of had to fence oh a couple of dozen acres of tundra and would have inconvenience maybe...just maybe forty or fifty Caribou and a couple of Moose.

If this had been Hugo Chavez's oil company with a sideways Gulf rig, drilling under us from Cuban waters. Obama and this boards sniveling liberal whine bags would be on their knees sucking his Latin American Communist cock, while explaining to us all that this wasn't really much of a disaster at all and certainly nothing that rose to the level of a hurricane Katrina.

So what have I been watching on my television every night?

Maybe you should change the name to PalinsLilHelper.

As I recall this was her idiotic response to the oil spill, faithfully being parroted by those more enamored of what's in her panties than what's in her head.

I think its very instructive that all our environmental and green saviors chose the more environmentally dangerous drilling method, based not on the threat to the environment...but on whether or not it would provide revenue to the state that gave us Sarah Palin.

I'm no great Palin fan. As I thought Palin's nomination was a cynical attempt to enlist the anti abortion soccer mom set and that there were many conservative and pre-Paulbot Libertarian voices out there that had considerably more gravitas. However, The liberals choice of places to drill. (Offshore as opposed to Alaska.) Illustates very clearly, what a political talking points and leverage, lip service, sham modern liberal environmentalism has become.

Uhhhh.............can you point out what environmentalists were in favor of offshore deep-water drilling?

To the best of my knowledge environmental groups have opposed both.

And let's be accurate.  No one was opposed to drilling in Alaska as a whole,  they were opposed to drilling in a national wildlife refuge.
