Aneirin -> Dual Core woes ? (6/12/2010 6:01:39 AM)

Ok, this lappy I have, was my first ever new computer, it has served me well for the last three years despite the crap operating system it is running, but one thing always annoyed me about it, was the AVG daily virus scan. It annoyed me for the reason I paid more than I could afford for an Intel Core Duo processor with the understanding that come irritating things like virus scans, my normal day to day activities might be unhindered. But when I am ungoing a virus scan, this thing crawls, locks up and after the scan, the computer is a dog to work with, thus demanding a restart if any sense is going to be got out of the thing.

Now the machine is a HP 530 running 32 bit Vista home basic. Intel Core Duo CPU T2300 @1.66ghz,2gb RAM and mobile intel 945 express chipset family. HD space about a third free.

Should this thing be running like a dog, it has always been so, which quite dissapointed me.

But the plans are to reformat on put XP pro on it, as since the last vista update, the CD drive has ceased to function, yet diagnostics says there is nothing wrong with the drive, so I suspect registry.

But the reformat will come in a few weeks time, that is when I get the new computer, as I am being very kindly given a new Apple Macbook Pro 13 inch to reliably help with my studies.

But as this lappy is my first bought computer, I am keen to sort it out, for I believ the problems are not entirely the architecture's fault.

I don't know if this is true, but I heard that you can't reformat to get rid of Vista and run XP instead. Something about you cannot get rid of the entire Vista OS so the computer will not properly install another operating system.

I am no computer expert and what I have been told might be hogwash.

You CAN put whatever you want on the computer, the big problem with going back to XP from vista however is the drivers, they don't always install straight forward.

You can try to install windows 7 which i imagine would go more smoothly as the drivers should pretty much automatically work or you can google for your laptop "hp 530 xp drivers" and you should find the drivers to help your situation tho i can't promise it will be easy.

Also if the cd rom drive is in perfectly working order you should still be able to boot from it, make sure in your bio's that it's the first to boot.

P.S. I forgot to mention that windows 7 seems to chug along better than vista with less requirements, i have it running smoothly on a single core less than 2.0ghz and only a gig of ram (i turn aero off tho)

Oh and this isn't a problem with dual-core, I would blame vista and the "lower end" dual core and low ram they sold vista on computers that could hardly run it, plus all the bloatware that comes with a new pc stuff that runs ALL the time, i find it's best to just reformat before i even use them because they partner a lot of times with companies renowned for spyware .

It is vista. It runs too many processes which slows the system down like a slug in a box of rice crispies. Most of that crap can be turned off, including that ridiculous user account control. You don't need a google deskbar, or any other deskbar for that matter. You don't need to run the HP bar that your system keeps up on top. Avg, while not my favorite antivirus should be set to do only one scan a week, at a convienient time of day for you. I set most of my clients avg scans to happen around their dinner time.

Windows 7 runs fewer processes and gives you more control. It almost feels like XP though the system itself is like Vista, which makes upgrades, drivers ect easier and more compatible.

I have two drives on my system, one that has Vista and the other has Windows 7. I have tweaked my Vista so that it is tolerable but even with the tweaks it runs a bit slower (at more percentage) on the vista than it does on the 7 while using the same programs.

You have a 32 bit system, which would do much nicer with 3 g of ram instead of 2. Don't let them sell you more since 32 bit processors can only use up to 3 g.

I have AVG on my desktop which runs XP. Basically you schedule your daily scan for a time of day you don't need the computer. Because from noon till 25 after, it's useless. AVG just takes over during it's scanning but I don't find I get much use out of it when I'm running Spybot or C Cleaner either.

Much as I dislike vista, sounds like a general case of the thing getting clogged up with a load of background programs you don't need. I have a vista machine with daily AVG scans & never notice them, if they are slowing ya down....probably they're just exacerbating the general clogness, but ya can always turn off the daily scan and do it manually every now and again.

upgrade to windows 7 and get an ssd drive in there. Solid State Drives, if you get an okay one are way faster than the magnetic based drives, you most likely have.

They are smaller in capacity right now though but if you don't have gobs of junk you just can't live without instant access to, SSD rocks.

Just get an external drive for your movies.

If you have a buddy or someone that knows just a bit about computer, they should be able to do it for you.

I heard this evening that I can purchase windows 7 at £45 due to the fact that I have a student email account, a friend is sending me the link. Regarding my XP pro disc, I have the drivers already downloaded and copied to various locations, that with the help of the website; Tech Support Guy. com. I have so far resisted reformatting due to this being my only viable computer and I am not that trustworthy of this machine as it is. I have a back up machine, a Compaq Aramada E500 which though slow due to it being a pentium 2 on win 98 I have not really run for the past few years, so I am dubious, and it with no wifi card at that. Now I am getting the mac book pro, this lappy will become my backup and general use machine, as the mac will be solely for my studies only.

But if all goes well, the Armada E 500 will be passed on to an unemployed friend in financial dire straits, that is once myself and a more computer literate friend have updated the machine to its limit, as the E500 was designed to be expandable.

But Vista sucks big time, hence the mac on it's way, I did have a choice between a pc and a mac, vista did it for me and due to various problems I have, I always found mac to be more intutive despite having never received any training on how to use them. The college pcs require the three finger salute just to get them to respond, whereas the i macs are so easy to get into and very pleasing  to look at too.
