gungadin09 -> Freud's theory of the inborn need for aggression (6/12/2010 4:37:18 PM)

Freud believed that human beings are born with a thirst for aggression and violence, which counteracts the advances of civilization. In other words, we are all just animals, waiting for the chance to rip out each other's throats. After reading some of the threads today, i am inclined to agree. (Well, i agreed already...) i am suprised by the (unnessasary) viciousness of people's responses, the need to gang up on someone or belittle them, and the speed with which a thread that started out as an idea deteriorates into petty bickering and name calling.

i have often experienced this kind of viciousness at work, but i always assumed it was because i work in a particularly aggressive profession (i'm a cook). i'm beginning to realise that that has little to do with the question; that human beings, all human beings, just have a deep seated need to be mean sometimes. Any thoughts? Below is a quote from Sigmeund Freud:

"Man are not gentle creatures who want to be loved, and who at the most can defend themselves if they are attacked; they are, on the contrary, creatures among whose instinctual endowments is to be reckoned a powerful share of aggressiveness. As a result, their neighboor is for them not only a potential helper or sexual object, but also someone who tempts them to satisfy their aggression on him, to exploit his capacity for work without compensation, to use him sexually without his consent, to seize his possessions, to humiliate him, to cause him pain, to torture and kill him. "
Homo homini lupus (Man is a wolf to man).

Pam, what you see as vicious attacks, I view as bluntness. Most people don't want advice, even when they say they do. Instead they really want sympathy and to be told they are right.

Unfortunately doing that doesn't help anyone see clearly. Taking the blinders off can.

If someone says they want sympathy, they usually get it. If they say they just want to rant, they usually get that. But if they claim to want to change things and really don't, then it isn't our jobs to read their minds and say "there, there, you poor thing".

It's a text only medium, I can't know if they just want to rant or complain or if they're serious about wanting help. I tend to believe them and offer help which never includes patting them and saying you poor thing. But since it's a text only medium the onus is upon the op to be clear in what he or she says and how they say it. Because it's hard to know if someone means to be joking when it doesn't read that way.

Too often people don't realize how they come across. The perfect example of this is the mind control thread. We all took guesses at what he was talking about because he has terrible communication skills. And when someone did guess right, he was condescending and arrogant. You don't get people to want to help you by being condescending and arrogant and saying he can't communicate clearly because then he would give away his secret powers was definitely arrogant sounding.

i know what You mean. In my response to the OP on that thread, i commented on His earnestness. That was hypocritical of me. i knew He wasn't being "earnest". i knew He just wanted to be patted on the head and told how gifted and consciencious He was. i should have been more straightforward about what i thought. Nevertheless, being blunt and honest is one thing, while being vicious and petty is another. Many of the posts i see cross over that line. I know we're all adults and can take it. Nobody's crying in their pillow over what someone wrote about them on collarme. i'm just saying that it is possible to be honest and mature at the same time.

I do not think that animals have a deep need to "rip each other's throats out". In fact most animals competing for mates, etc, are not attempting to kill each other, just warn each other off...

Mankind is not as nice as his animal counterparts....Animals are usually not sadistic or unnecessarily cruel, although they will at times toy with their food.

That being said, I think what you are noticing is that there is something to the pecking order in life.... and if people seem petty and cruel to you, well, when someone new comes into an established group there is some "pecking" that goes on, and the new person adjusts, or continues to get pecked at....

The workplace is an aberration... human beings were meant to live and work in small groups, and it was even more important to get along, because if you can't you either got labelled a demon witch, or you left the group. We are now forced to work and compete with people we would have in earlier times kicked out of the tribe.... that leads to conflict

It's been one of my goals in life since undergrad to NEVER define myself by anything Freud has ever said.

Your definition of maturity may not be the same as mine. Mine includes have a reasonable sense of self that doesn't take everything personally. People that run around with victim mentalities really should reconsider whether bdsm and/or d/s is in their best interests in my opinion. I actually don't often see people being vicious and petty, I see people being straight forward, humorous and blunt. I appreciate that in people. If you interpret words on a screen that personally, you might want to look at that. I'm not here to hold anyone's hand, I do that irl for a living. You're not alone in your thinking that we should be the adult babysitters of the internet however.

You have to admit, his theories on defense mechanisms are applicable to most of us at some point in our lives (if not all of us).... shit, I am projecting again

Do you ever feel like ripping out throats on CM, being you are an animal and all

(just because human beings give live birth, have hair, and milk their young doesn't make us animals... we are more evolved, everyone knows that!)

laurell3 -> RE: Freud's theory of the inborn need for aggression (6/12/2010 6:17:15 PM)

As indicated above, Jeff finds better uses for throats....
